Heartstopper Season 2: Release Date, Cast, and Everything You Need to Know

Heartstopper fans, rejoice: Nick, Charlie, and the rest of their crew are coming back to Netflix for Heartstopper season 2. 

On May 20, 2022, almost a full month after its season 1 premiere, Netflix announced that Heartstopper had officially been renewed for season 2. The queer, British, coming-of-age rom-com series is based on the graphic novel and webcomic series of the same name, created by Alice Oseman. 

According to Deadline, Heartstopper is currently one of Netflix's best-reviewed series, and has earned critical acclaim for its positive representation of young queer people. The show has become a massive hit for the streamer, and has developed a large, devoted fanbase. Heartstopper fans on social media have been vocal about the impact the show has had on them IRL, including a few who were inspired to come out after watching the series.

Nick and Charlie are just getting started, and we are more than ready for the next season of their love story. When is Heartstopper season 2 coming out on Netflix?

Heartstopper season 2 will arrive on Netflix on August 3, 2023. Back in September 2022, Netflix announced that Heartstopper season 2 had officially started production, and only seven months later, the official release date for season 2 was revealed by none other than series stars Joe Locke and Kit Connor.

“What do you think is new in season 2 and what can fans expect?” Kit asks Joe. Cue: a montage of behind-the-scenes clips from the production of the second season, and exciting teases from so many of your favorite faces.

“We might expect Imogen to start taking care of herself a bit more and put herself above boys," said actress Rhea Norwood. “There's so many things that happen with Elle this season that you're not ready for," Yasmin Finney teased. “I would say Elle is different in the sense [that] she's more confident. She surrounds herself with people that elevate her."

“Charlie goes on more of a journey this season. His story's a bit more mature,” reveals Joe. “Alice has got some amazing scripts for us," adds Kit, referring to Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman. Who is in the cast of Heartstopper season 2?

In September 2022, Netflix confirmed that the entire main cast of Heartstopper will be returning for season 2. This includes Kit Connor (who plays Nick), Joe Locke (Charlie), William Gao (Tao), Tobie Donovan (Isaac), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Sebastian Croft (Ben), Rhea Norwood (Imogen), and Jenny Walser (Tori). 

There was some speculation whether Yasmin Finney would return for season 2 following the news of her casting in the iconic BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, but have no fear — Netflix confirmed that Yasmin will be returning to reprise her role as fan-favorite Elle.

Netflix also revealed that the show has welcome seven (!) new cast members. Jack Barton will portray David Nelson, Nick's older brother; Nima Taleghani will play Mr. Farouk, a schoolteacher at Truham; Bradley Riches, who first appeared in S1 as a Truham student, will now return in a named role as James McEwan; Bel Priestley and Ash Self will play Naomi and Felix, respectively, who are “new friends of Elle"; and Thibault de Montalembert will play Stephane, Nick’s dad.

Back in July, Heartstopper announced an open casting call for the role of Sahar Zahid, who is a character from the original webcomic who attends Higgs. While no acting experience was necessary, the show did state that they were specifically looking for plus size actors who are British and South Asian and identify as female or nonbinary. Netflix announced that the seventh new cast member would be Leila Khan, who landed the role of Sahar “after a nation-wide” search — her portrayal of Sahar will be her first-ever professional acting role. What will Heartstopper season 2 be about?

Heartstopper season 1 covered the events of Volume One and Two of the Heartstopper graphic novel series, written by Alice Oseman and published in 2019. Though the exact plot of season 2 is still under wraps, fans are speculating that the show's second season could cover Heartstopper Volume Three, in which Nick and Charlie encounter their first real relationship problems and go on a school trip to Paris, and Volume Four, in which Nick and Charlie experience and try to overcome personal challenges. The third and fourth volumes of the graphic novel series were released in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and the fifth installment is slated to hit shelves in December 2023. A sixth and final book has been announced, but there's no release date yet.

The official synopsis for Heartstopper season 2 was revealed by Netflix on April 24, 2023, and reads as follows: “Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.” Looks like the fan hunches were right — we're going to Paris!

Heartstopper season 2 is getting close, and Netflix just released a fresh crop of photos featuring new and returning cast — in Paris! “Continuing the story of Nick, Charlie and the rest of the Heartstopper gang for Season 2 has been an absolute privilege," executive producer Patrick Walkers said in a press statement. "Alice Oseman and I have been able to watch the actors evolve their performances in every way, and this season is so emotional because of their amazing work. Get ready!”

When was Heartstopper season 2 announced?

Heartstopper season 2 was announced, surprisingly, at the same time as Heartstopper season 3! Netflix granted the show a double-renewal in May 2022, locking in their streaming slot for two more seasons. The show's cast shared their excitement about the news on social media, with Joe Locke captioning an Instagram photo dump behind-the-scenes shots: “HOW MANY MORE SEASONS??? ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️”

Yasmin Finney also posted a photo dump of BTS shots, with her and her castmates holding up the peace sign in nearly every pic. “[Two] more seasons plz,” she captioned the post with a two-finger emoji. 

Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman also celebrated on Twitter, sharing a video from Netflix's official Twitter account of them literally illustrating the news. “Seasons 2 and 3, here we come!!!” Alice tweeted, complete with a leaf emoji.
