A Makeup Guide for Fans of "The Bold Type"

There are a lot of reasons you might find yourself obsessed with The Bold Type. Perhaps you’re an aspiring fashion designer just like Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy), and you’ve admired her journey from intern to budding style icon. Or maybe you’ve been contemplating a run for office, and Kat Edison (Aisha Dee) has given you the final push you’ve needed with the recent storyline of her character running for city council. Or possibly you’re just rooting for Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens) who continues to find her voice as a journalist working for Scarlet Magazine, the women’s publication that serves as the backdrop for the Freeform series.

Whatever the reason, you’ve probably also noticed that the Sutton, Kat and Jane’s makeup game is always on point. Whether they’re lounging at Kat’s loft, having a top-secret convo in the Scarlet fashion closet, or attending a fancy NYC (or Paris!) gala, the three always seem to be the very definition of flawless. I, for one, cannot stop thinking about Jane’s deep ruby red lipstick, and have spent several afternoons at Sephora trying to replicate the dramatic look.

Of course, each of the three girls has their own style, and the more you watch the series, the more you begin to notice the differences. Kathy Kelso, head of The Bold Type's makeup department, told Teen Vogue that she aims to keep Jane, Sutton, and Kat’s looks all uniquely “fresh” while highlighting their varying personalities. “Jane is more on the modern side,” Kathy says. “I do research on Instagram with all the stars and the red carpet looks for Jane. Sutton is a bit more romantic with ‘70s vintage looks, while Kat is more edgy.”

Part of Kathy’s process is to consult with the wardrobe department in order to coordinate the stars’ beauty vibes. “We always check with them to see how far we can go with makeup and the look,” she tells us, adding that there are some go-to products that she uses for all three girls, like Milk Makeup’s Kush Mascara and a variety of colorful eyeshadow palettes.
