Afropunk 2017 Street Style: See the Photos

Afropunk has grown tremendously in the 12 years since its inception. Today, it boasts headliners like Solange and Raphael Saadiq, booths hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and coverage from top fashion magazines. But fortunately, the true ethos of the Afropunk brand remains unchanged. It started as a gathering for black people with a love for punk music, and it still remains a safe space where we can sing, dance, revel in our heritage, and celebrate our culture. At the festival this weekend in Brooklyn, our varied and resplendent beauty was on full display. There was plenty to ogle, from sheer ombré skirts to Afro puffs adorned with bright flowers to a spray-painted Destiny's Child handbag. But the most eye-catching looks sent powerful messages about identity: a Kenté cloth tunic and a leather bag in the shape of the continent of Africa, a t-shirt bearing the phrase "F*ck your privilege," and a Colin Kaepernick jersey styled with printed trousers.
