25 Natural Hairstyles from Afropunk 2018 to Try Now

There are not too many places on earth quite like Afropunk. In fact, it might be accurate to say that there is no other place like Afropunk. Since 2005, the music festival turned lifestyle brand, has curated a space for black people of various backgrounds, interests, and shades to celebrate black music, fashion, beauty, and pretty much every other manifestation of blackness. This year's festival was no different. For the 13th year, Afropunk returned to Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park to put on a two-day festival that included performances by Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, H.E.R., Daniel Ceasar, Miguel, Lion Babe, and more.

Much like previous Afropunks, the event's spectacular lineup competed for attention against stylish attendees. As much as the fans were there to watch their favorites perform, they were also there to dance, smile, eat, laugh, and thrive off the energy of other festival goers. These elements are what separates Afropunk from other festivals. Each year Afropunk brings together a community of like-minded people who appreciate uniqueness and encourage it across all facets of life.

The most beautiful part about Afropunk is the freedom it projects. These feelings of freedom were announced both vocally and in the striking hair, beauty, and fashion statements of attendees. Natural hair styles like locs, cornrows, and afros were proudly displayed above the crowds; ruffled pant suits, wide cut motorcycle pants, and flower crowns stretched across the lawns; blue, glitter, and dark shadows glimmered across the eyelids. Many of these looks were DIY, and others were purchased from the local apparel shops that sold everything from dashikis to spiked necklaces. One thing that each of these styles do have in common is the fact that they're worn with confidence and with the effervescent glow of Afropunk.
