Street Style at Barbados Crop Over Festival

No one does festivals quite like Caribbean people. Case in point: Crop Over, one of the biggest festivals in the West Indies next to carnival in Trinidad. Dating back to the 1780s, it's a popular celebration marking the end of the sugar cane harvest. And these days, a massive fashion spectacle.

Every August, hundreds of thousands of people from around the globe make their way to the picturesque island of Barbados to take part in six week-long string of activities from amazing concerts and breakfast fêtes where popular DJs play the best in calypso and soca, to dusk-to-dawn parties where revelers get covered in paint and mud for the fun of it — all of which leads up to the main event: Grand Kadooment Day. This is when masqueraders “jump” with different bands wearing an array of vibrant and elaborate costumes typically embellished with bright feathers and rhinestones while whining and vibing to electrifying music.

It’s truly a sight to see. You may have gotten a taste of it whenever Rihanna’s photos from the lively occasion hit the internet with her sporting bedazzled panties and a bra with a mesmerizing headdress. While she wasn’t in attendance this year (she typically does it every other year), there were still a plethora of amazing and jaw-dropping looks on the road.
