This Is What the Protests in Baton Rouge Look Like
On June 6, Alton Sterling was shot and killed by a police officer. In the wake of his death, protests sprung up nationwide, but especially in Baton Rouge, where Sterling was killed.
Citizens and activists marched to rally against police brutality and reaffirm the Black Lives Matter movement. Despite the fact that much of the demonstrations have been peaceful, there have been a number of arrests, including that of leading activist and mayoral candidate Deray McKesson. Deray McKesson was taken into custody along with at least 33 others during a peaceful protest in Baton Rouge on Friday night. According to witnesses who spoke to the Washington Post, his arrest was violent. The Associated Press has since reported that he was released on bond at around 3:30 this afternoon after being charged with "obstruction of a highway." Read our full report on his arrest here.
