“Loft beds are a really great way to maximize space,” explains Amanda Wyatt, the visionary behind Design Insider. Before shopping for a loft bed, Wyatt recommends asking yourself what you’d utilize the extra space for, then you can narrow down your options. For example, if you’re looking to make use of your high ceilings, you might want to consider a ceiling-suspended loft bed. If you want to fit a desk and dresser inside your room, you might want to look for a loft bed with these built-in features.
Interior designer Temi Johnson notes that if you’re shopping for a loft bed for a child, it’s important to consider the long-term use of the underside space. She recommends not buying a bed with these additions if you know your child’s needs might change. Instead, she recommends adding free-standing furniture beneath the bed so you can continually change the use of the space with ease.

For Wyatt, what a loft bed is made out of is one of the most important aspects of choosing a loft bed. “Material is always important for aesthetics,” she explains. “I personally always gravitate to the look of hardwoods. They age well, are durable, and resistant to scratching.”
Johnson echoes Wyatt saying traditional materials like wood are a better investment. “There are many cheap loft bed options out there, but in my opinion they tend to be made of cheaper materials that aren’t going to withstand the constant ladder movement and wear and tear. Going for traditional materials, such as wood, is always a safe bet, or products that combine these stronger materials in the key segments of the build.”
13/13Disadvantages of a Loft Bed
While there are tons of pros to owning a loft bed, there’s a few disadvantages to consider before purchasing one. The first is making sure you have ceilings high enough to accommodate a loft bed. Wyatt recommends leaving enough room between the top of the bed and the ceiling so that you can sit up comfortably on your bed. If you don’t leave enough room, you run the risk of hitting your head if you sit up too fast. Another disadvantage to a loft bed is accessibility. Not everyone is able to climb a ladder or stairs to get into bed. It’s best to consider your own mobility needs before committing to a loft bed.
