11 Best Superhero Movies Ever
Superheroes: They’re aliens, super-geniuses, or are just normal people with an affinity for wearing spandex (and usually a lot of money to devote to super accessories). Whether they originate in comic books or are straight from the imaginations of the masses, watching these characters come to life on the silver screen is downright electrifying. They soar through the air! They fight! They represent the greater good! And something about going along for the ride when our favorite heroes take flight gives us the feeling that we can accomplish anything, too. Now if only they would stop living under aliases and step out into the real world so we could call on them… In honor of some of the top death-defying, laser-beam-shooting, cape-wearing players in the game, we’ve rounded up 11 superhero movies that prove anything is possible with a little bit of superhuman strength and a whole lot of heart.
1/11The Dark Knight
The second installment of The Dark Knight trilogy blew audiences minds back in 2008. Not only did the movie draw crowds further into the dark world of Christian Bale’s portrayal of Batman, but it gave viewers an even greater gift: Heath Ledger as the Joker. Unfortunately, Ledger passed away shortly after the film was released, but his performance was so powerful that he was posthumously awarded an Oscar for best supporting actor.
2/11Spider-Man
Hollywood kept making Spider-Man movies after the 2002 flick aired — we're on our third reboot in recent years! The verdict's out on whether studios should have laid the character to rest, but Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker was pretty perfect. Spider-Man from the early aughts had everything: action, origins, and the iconic upside-down kiss with Kirsten Dunst. Hey, if it's good enough for The O.C. to recreate, it's more than good enough for us.
3/11The Incredibles
Everything Pixar touches turns to gold, and The Incredibles was no exception. Former superheroes living as normal people? Check. Epic costumes that make spandex seem cool? Check. Most importantly, a villain that’s equal parts demented and inventive? Double check.

Nothing says epic like not just one — but seven (7!) superheroes working together to fight evil. The Avengers had fans all over the world freaking out to see their favorite Marvel characters united — and the announcement of the movie confirmed what fans had suspected, that there were nods to the movie as far back as 2008’s Iron Man. Now that’s dedication.
5/11Watchmen
Watchmen was mind-blowing, but it was also incredibly dark — both literally and figuratively. The neo-noir film followed six retired superheroes as they reunited to defeat an evil villain, but they end up uncovering an even more massive conspiracy that threatens the fate of the world.
6/11Hancock
Few people can save the world the way Will Smith can. Whether he's battling aliens or the more practical logistical nightmare of millions of dollars' worth of damage in Los Angeles, he's someone you want to root for. With Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman by his side, his downright human shortcomings will make you see superheroes in an entirely new light.
7/11The Powerpuff Girls Movie
Sugar, spice, and everything nice — oh, and don’t forget the chemical X. These ingredients created Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, but it was the love of tons of fans that got them their own movie! In the 2002 flick, the girls learn to control their powers and also face down the dastardly Mojo Jojo.
8/11X Men
The original X-Men movie was so popular, that there have already been seven follow-up movies since it aired. (Okay, we'll suspend our judgment of Spider-Man reboots.) The first installment of the series featured some of the OG characters from the comic books like Rogue, Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Mystique. As the motley crew of mutants try to sort out their powers, Magneto and Professor Xavier grapple with how to deal with the latest Mutant Registration Act enacted by Congress. Spoiler: the two take very different stances on the issue and an all-out war ensues.
9/11Man of Steel
Movies have been made about Superman since the 1970s. It’s not hard to see why, because the story of the alien-turned-farm-boy is pretty inspiring, after all. But something about the 2013 chapter of Clark Kent’s super story was a game changer. It could have been the epic showdown between Superman and aliens from his former home planet, Krypton, or the incredible acting chops of Amy Adams…or even Henry Cavill’s rippling biceps. Hey, we’re not ruling anything out here.
10/11Kick-Ass
Kick-Ass is definitely the black sheep of superhero movies. The 2010 film developed a cult following, thanks in part to Chloë Grace Moretz’s character, Hit-Girl. The 11-year-old swearing, bad-guy-beating normal kid turned avenger sets the tone for the fast-paced dark comedy. Do Hit-Girl and the movie’s titular character, Kick-Ass, have what it takes to bring down a mob boss? They might be rookies, but no one should underestimate them.
11/11Iron Man
Iron Man offered up a different sort of superhero: one who was a smartass, to be precise. It’s difficult to pinpoint whether crowds loved the story of eccentric billionaire Tony Stark, or if audiences were just infatuated with Robert Downey Jr., but either way the film was a hit. With two more Iron Man movies made after the fact and a starring role in The Avengers, it looks like Tony Stark and his gadgets will be around for a while.
