9 Best Tampons for Teens, According to Ob-Gyns
While the recent news about toxic metals found in tampons may sound terrifying, experts believe that the best tampons for teens (when used correctly) are still a safe option to reach for (note: the Food and Drug Administration is looking further into potential risks). “That study did not show that any of these metals, which are found everywhere—in what we eat, in the air we breathe—are absorbed vaginally,” says Ob-Gyn Jennifer Lincoln, MD, author of Let’s Talk About Down There.
“If [a tampon] is on the shelves in the United States, it's cleared by the FDA, and you can rest easy that it's okay for you to use.” Just stick with unscented tampon brands without dyes to avoid any irritation, she says.
There have also been a few viral videos on TikTok alerting viewers about toxic shock syndrome (TSS), a rare but dangerous complication of certain bacterial infections, some of which can come from tampon use, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, Dr. Lincoln says that as long as you change a tampon at least once every eight hours, the risk of TSS is pretty low. “Back in the day, these super absorbent tampons were just left in way too long and became a place for bacteria to grow,” Dr. Lincoln says. “Nowadays, we don't have those kinds [of tampons].”
