11 Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2016
2016 was a year for a lot of things — but love was not really one of them. While the past 365 days certainly brought us a handful of relationship goals (Miley and Liam, we’re lookin’ at you), we’ve also endured an awful lot of heartbreak in the last year. It seemed like every few weeks, we learned of yet another couple calling it quits, one after another. Was there something in the water? Was it contagious? We might not ever know. Here are 11 couples who ended things in 2016, and made us want to watch rom-coms and eat ice cream in solidarity.

Taylor Swift’s split from Calvin Harris was both shocking and unexpected. After 15 months of dating — and a seriously #InstaGoals beach vacation together — Tayvin came to an end this past summer. The Taylor/Calvin breakup can easily be noted as the launching point for a LOT of other drama that came later.

The short-lived Hiddleswift only spanned three months, but it was the subject of a thousand theories and speculations. (Remember all that wondering whether or not their relationship was staged?) Ultimately, Hiddleswift was not built to last, but along the way, they did have a lot of adorable photos together.

Okay, Gigi and Zayn only broke up for a hot second, but it was devastating when it happened. There were a lot of rumors flying about what exactly happened, but we know this much: it was a very temporary split, if one at all. (Hey, all couples fight — even famous ones!) Luckily, they got back together quickly, and they remain as one of the cutest current celeb couples of our time. Phew.

Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama were together for nearly six years, so their breakup was a pretty big deal. Of course, it wasn’t the first time that they broke up, as they had a short split in 2012 too, but their final breakup this summer was pretty sad. However, Demi and Wilmer seemed to end on good terms, as they released a statement explaining that they worked better as best friends.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie started dating in 2005 and tied the knot in 2014. They announced their divorce this past fall, signifying the end of Brangelina.

If you were to try to chart the ups and downs of Kylie and Tyga’s relationship, you’d end up with a graph that looks like one of those heart monitors. After breaking up for the zillionth time this past spring, they got back together over the summer. Can we talk about that birthday party that Kylie threw for Tyga’s son King in October?

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney seemed to have such a passionate relationship, so when news broke regarding their ended engagement, the pain was felt around the world. While the news of their breakup started with a rumor, Lady Gaga soon took to Instagram to announce their split, writing, “Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break.” Le sigh.

This summer, Kristen Stewart confirmed her relationship with Alicia Cargile, although there had been rumors of the two of them dating for quite some time before that. However, they have since split (tear), and Kristen has recently been spotted with St. Vincent.

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd were on their way toward becoming relationship goals, when rumors started circulating that they split last month. (Nooooooooo!) They recently reunited at the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, where Bella outdid all of us by ‘gramming a photo of The Weeknd to congratulate him on a killer performance. #ExGoals, TBH.

Rumors started circulating like wildfire when Zac suddenly deleted all of his photos of him and Sami from his Instagram (a tell-tale sign of trouble in paradise). Sources close to the pair explained that Zac was the one who ended the relationship, and that their busy careers began to get in the way of their romance.
