You don’t have to live on another planet to know that taking credit for someone else's idea is wrong. But why is it when cultural appropriation comes into play, the line between right and wrong gets blurred? Due to systematic racism and classism, styles that originate within marginalized groups often come with a stigma attached to them. When cultural appropriation happens, those same looks are co-opted by the mainstream without credit and recognition. Even worse, said looks are only celebrated by larger groups once they're not associated with the culture they originated from. When larger groups make money off of those appropriated looks, it's a further attack on the community they’re stealing from. To complicate things even further, sometimes the original looks have religious and cultural significance, and that sacred meaning is often completely dismissed by appropriators.
