Diverse Coachella 2018 Street-Style Photos

From the runways at fashion week to the front of glossy magazine covers, fashion has perpetuated a standard of beauty that praises whiteness and thinness — and ostracizes anyone who doesn't fit the bill. Street style is a relatively new medium, but it adheres to the same discriminatory tactics we've criticized on the runway. During New York Fashion Week last season, we raised the issue of the lack of representation in street style, a platform that was initially created to democratize fashion and celebrate everyday people with exceptional style. In response to the article, street-style photographers insisted that inclusive galleries just weren't possible, citing everything from racist editors to the myth that plus-size and nonwhite attendees just aren't stylish. We commissioned a street-style photographer who proved, with his diverse array of photos at Paris Fashion Week, that it's not hard to create inclusive street-style galleries. At the start of festival season, we hit the desert in Palm Springs with one goal in mind: Show that plus-size, disabled, and nonwhite people are attending these events and are more than worthy of being featured. We asked this select group of Coachella attendees if they felt represented in fashion, and their response showed us that change is coming, albeit slowly. Scroll down for our full recap.
