6 Times Daniel Radcliffe Proved He Was More Than Just Harry Potter

OK, so technically Dan didn’t do those things, Harry Potter did — our bad. In our defense, it does often seem like Daniel’s name is synonymous with all things magical.
Although Harry Potter fans will always hold a special place in their heart for Daniel Radcliffe as The Boy Who Lived, it’s been amazing to watch the Englishman grow as an actor. From rom-coms to biographical thrillers, Radcliffe has proven time and time again that he has some serious theatrical chops. And we have a feeling that Dan’s newest role as Igor in Victor Frankenstein will affirm those skills. To celebrate the Brit’s talents that extend beyond the expansive Potterverse, we’ve rounded up Radcliffe’s six best roles that prove he brings more to the table than a stellar patronus.

Set in London during the early 1900s, Radcliffe seamlessly acclimates to this film’s dark and dreary world. Dan plays Arthur Kipps, a recently widowed lawyer who travels to a remote part of the English countryside where children die without reason. Arthur slowly realizes there’s a supernatural component to the deaths, but will anyone else believe he’s seeing a mysterious woman in black whenever the terror occurs? The 2012 flick is not for the faint of heart as there are gruesome plot twists and turns. Radcliffe’s spooky side is definitely showing in this movie, which only makes us more excited to see him grapple with monsters in Victor Frankenstein.

If you thought Harry Potter had definite chemistry with Cho Chang and Ginny Weasley, then you’ll love Dan’s What If character, Wallace, and his connection with leading lady Chantry. This quirky rom-com takes place in Canada and waxes on friendship between the sexes. Chantry has a boyfriend but wants Wallace in her life. Can the two maintain a platonic relationship without anyone getting hurt?

Based on an unsettling true story, Kill Your Darlings stars our favorite wand-wielding Brit as an imaginative American poet, Allen Ginsberg. While attending Columbia University, Allen forms unlikely friendships with other fledgling writers — his strongest tie being to Lucien Carr. Daniel’s character becomes entwined in a complicated relationship with Lucien (played by Dane DeHaan), which is made even more mysterious after a murder occurs. As the movie progresses, the line between fact and fiction becomes blurred, and Allen is forced to choose between friendship and the truth.

You decided to watch Trainwreck with your besties and loved every Schumer-filled minute. When Daniel Radcliffe popped up on screen, you were pleasantly surprised and couldn’t resist laughing your butt off. The cameo offered a rare look at Daniel’s highly hilarious side, which is even more impressive after learning that most of his lines were improvised. You go, Gryffindor!

J.K. Rowling was not the only celebrity to chime in about Daniel’s role in Equus. The play’s considered a classic, but there are some...racy bits. A teenage Dan starred on Broadway and turned tons of muggle heads by acting in the buff. Nude scenes aside, he was praised for taking on the role of disturbed Alan Strang, but we’re OK with not seeing Dan’s wand for a while.
