Since the release of Beyoncé’s Lemonade, the lemon is having a major moment. The chic citrus is truly the talk of the town this summer. Beyoncé has even gone so far as to deck herself out in the fruit on holiday with Jay-Z, thanks to the Dolce & Gabbana’s obsession with all-lemon-everything. But Dolce & Gabbana’s claim to lemon fame goes way farther back than the powerful and punchy anthems of summer 2016. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been captivated by the juicy fruit so much so that it is one of the main notes in their highly successful Light Blue fragrance line, which turns 15 this year. The journey of this energizing cult classic and award-winning perfume began in 2001 with the original launch. To celebrate its anniversary, I jetted to Capri, the island that serves as the main inspiration for the fragrance, to experience its origins and fete the new, limited-edition versions. “The designers wanted to create the feeling of the homeland, the idea of endless Mediterranean summers, the sunshine, the island of Capri,” explains Lewis Peacock of the P&G Prestige team, who helps craft the very fragrances you spritz on daily. “The construction is very important. It’s contemporary, but also something that gives a warm feeling of familiarity. Light Blue is modernity and tradition combined.” Click through to see how Dolce & Gabbana turned lemons into lemonade with their Light Blue legacy.

British model David Gandy and Italian bombshell Bianca Balti have starred in Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue campaigns over the years — here they are under the very lemons that actually grow in Capri. Talk about natural beauty.

The two new special editions pay homage to the island of Capri. “The designers wanted to paint an olfactive picture of the whole island by bringing to life the perfect summer day — the landscape, the honeysuckle (the flower of Capri), the bougainvillea, the citrus groves. It’s all of the sights, smells, and the rugged nature,” Lewis explains of the birth of Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Love in Capri (for women) and Beauty of Capri (for men). Even the bottles and the perfume itself represent the mysterious waters of the blue grotto.

To fully understand the foundation of the perfume, Lewis took us through the exact notes that blend together to give the aroma of the island and sun-kissed skin. We were able to smell each unique aspect separately, such as mandarin, lemon, honeysuckle (caprifolio, also known as the hero note of the fragrance), almond blossom, heliotrope, jasmine, cedar wood, and musk, before experiencing the eau de Capri.
