1/12Sixteen-year-old singer Madison Beer, who skyrocketed to fame when Justin Bieber tweeted a link to a video of her incredible vocals, might be a total beauty girl, but she’s decided to ditch makeup. “I used to wake up hours before I’d have to be somewhere to apply a full face, but recently, I posted a photo with none on, and it’s the most-liked Instagram I have,” the social media star (who has 4 million Instagram followers, and counting!) says. She took the double taps and reassuring comments from her loyal fanbase as a sign to lighten up on product, and now, more than ever, she’s all about her hair. Still, with her on-the-go lifestyle, Madison aims for ease, and looks good doing so. We teamed up with her to present a selection of perfect-for-school hairstyles that fit any personality. “I usually go to sleep with wet hair. When I wake up, it either has a really pretty wave, or I look like a poodle,” says Madison of her daily hair experience. If you don’t happen to wake up feeling like a prom queen, hairstylist Sabrina Szinay says you can cheat perfect waves with a 25mm curling iron, like this one.
“Wrap big chunks of your hair around the iron,” Sabrina says. “If you use small pieces, hair tends to get overheated, and the result is tighter curls. The bigger the section, the more effortless the feel.” Sabrina relies on Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray to amp up fine hair and a smoothing serum like Tresemmé’s to control thicker, coarser strands.

“I take really good care of my hair,” says Madison, who went from blonde back to brunette quicker than most. “I dyed it blonde about two years ago, and I hated it! Everyone said to wait a few days, but a week later I still hated it and dyed it back to brown. I’m still struggling from that experience to this day! I had to cut off 9 inches and, every time I showered, the brown would strip and fade away. So, I just dyed it black.”
Since Madison has decided to embrace no-makeup makeup, she’s been focused on keeping her skin flawless. “I actually wash my face with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo,” Madison admits. “It’s the best face wash. I swear, it’s so good! I mean, think about it. It’s made for a baby’s head. It smells so good, it’s sensitive, and it gives you a super clean feeling.” Not all of us can say we take our hair routine straight to our face!
She also relies on moisturizer by L’Occitane, something makeup artist Anastasia Durasova slathered on the singer’s face on the blustery cold day of our shoot. “Madison travels a ton, so she has to make sure she stays hydrated,” says Anastasia.

“I love the look of braids, but I’m not good at them!” says Madison on her fascination with pretty plaits. Instead, she let Sabrina do the weaving. “To do a crown braid at home, first part your hair down the middle,” says Sabrina. “Then, braid each side like you’re going for pigtails and bring one side over the other, joining them together. Don’t go too tight with the braid, either. Instead, pull them out a bit for that unfussy look.”
When doing braids, Sabrina recommends running a product like Redken Braid Aid through strands, so that they have some grip and a better hold.

To go with Madison’s boho mood, Sabrina wove flowers into Madison’s milkmaid braid. If you're still totally stumped even after hours of studying braiding tutorials like this, simply top off your head with an embellished headband for the same hippie hair moment. After all, what’s a music fest without a hairpiece?
As for how she cares for her admittedly damaged ‘do, Madison is all about a drugstore staple: “In the shower I wash my hair with basic shampoo and conditioner — I like Pantene’s moisturizing conditioner. I wash it four to five times a week. And, once a week I braid my hair with the conditioner in and shave, or I sit with it for 10 minutes while I wait for it to soak up the moisture. It always feels so good after that.”

When Madison is in the midst of long studio recording sessions, or marathon trips from coast to coast (sometimes with her BF, fellow musician Jack Gilinsky of Jack & Jack), her hair routine can’t be complicated. But, unlike most of us, Madison has to deal with getting paparazzi’d on the reg. “I can do a bun pretty well and make it look good. Since I stopped wearing makeup, I’ll throw my hair in a topknot, and it looks nice and clean.”
And all that traveling works a number on her lips. “Whenever you’re on a plane a lot, your lips tend to get dried out,” explains Anastasia. For a flawless pout, Anastasia suggests grabbing a clean mascara wand and running it over your lips to remove dead skin. Then, follow up with a super hydrating balm like the one from Kiehl’s, Madison’s go-to.

For an updated, fun take on the trusted gym ponytail, Sabrina applied a shine spray on Madison’s hair and then brushed it through with a Mason Pearson. Next, she pulled it back in a high, swingy tail. She then took an elastic that matches Madison’s hair and tied it about a third of the way down the tail. To finish, she pulled it through, creating a badass bubble.
Because Madison is letting her barely-there makeup resolution go from the gym to wherever she goes, she now more than ever looks up to other celebs who highlight their natural beauty. “I think Chrissy Teigen takes great care of her skin. And so does Hailey Baldwin. They don’t wear a ton of makeup. It’s nice to be confident without it. I admire that,” she says.

Madison channeled her dark side and had a great time doing it. “I’m down to try a lot,” says Madison of her beauty adventures. “I want to dye my hair white. And my eyebrows! I should probably just get a wig though,” she says, coming to terms with the fact that a white dye job might not be the best follow-up to her short-lived days as a blonde.
And even though she’s constantly willing to push beauty boundaries, her fans don’t always approve. “You have to be yourself on social media. You can’t let what people say about you change your ways. People will say you don’t look good wearing so much makeup. Then they say you don’t look good without it. You can’t let that make a stamp on who you are,” she says.

For a head-turning style that’s seriously easy, the half topknot is the way to go. “You make a statement with your hair when you do a style like this,” says Sabrina. And it’s simple to recreate. Sabrina’s best advice? “Don’t think about it too much.” Simply take the hair from ear to ear and throw it up in a twist. Don’t wrap the knot too tight, though. Next, top it off with some texture spray to give it some added edge and let the flyaways do their thing.
To get Madison’s moody lip color, Anastasia lined her lips with a black pencil by Nars and then mixed up a black-and-blue lipstick combo so as not to go too harsh. As for her natural envy-inducing freckles? Madison hasn’t alway been the biggest fan. “When makeup artists used to do my makeup and my freckles would show through, I thought they were doing a bad job. I didn’t want to be able to see them,” she reminisces. Now they’re one of the traits she loves most. Anastasia played them up by using only a very sheer layer of foundation. “I love the bookworm look,” says Madison of her final transformation. “I need these glasses.” To play up her schoolgirl vibe, Sabrina went old school, with simple pigtail braids that surprisingly look so cool. For a more polished perfection, use a serum like Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil before you start braiding. And, if you don’t happen to be a braiding expert, start with two strands and work your way up to four.

"I’m not rushing anything. You can’t rush greatness,” Madison says of her plans for making new music for her adoring fans who can’t get enough of her catchy singles. “I don’t want to put something out and have it be mediocre. 2016 is me not putting anything half-assed out. I want to make my mark this year, and I’ve been working so hard. I’ve done more in 2016 already than I did in 2015. I’ve been making music and writing so much. I’m going to put a cover up soon. So stay tuned for that.” We’re only one month into the new year, and it’s clear Madison is one to watch for more than just her music.
