Fall 2018 Beauty Trends to Try
Pour yourself a PSL and take your sweaters out of storage, because fall is officially here. In addition to wrapping yourself in cozy blankets and binge watching the best new TV (Riverdale Season 3, we're lookin' at you), it's also the perfect time of year to change up your beauty look. Whether you're in the market for a fresh cut, or tempted to test a makeup look you never thought would grace your face, we've got you covered.
Get ready for a little glam-related nostalgia, because this season's biggest beauty trends bring us a major blast from the past. Think: '90s inspired makeup that would have looked right at home on the set of Clueless; The same early aughts bangs that Lauren Conrad wore on The Hills; And hair accessories that would make Blair Waldorf proud. Natural textures, bright makeup, and endlessly glow-y skin have also been everywhere from the runways to the red carpets, so there truly is something for everyone to try.

Put down those tweezers because big, bushy brows aren’t going anywhere any time soon. "This season, expect to see lots of "natural, fluffy brushed brows,” says celebrity makeup artist Emily Cheng, who was responsible for Yara Shahidi’s brushed-out brows at the 2018 Emmys. She suggests using neutral or light colored eyeshadows, like Seraphine Botanicals Chia and Camelia Palette, or her favorite Bobbi Brown Night Drama Palette, to contour and define your eyes, and make those brows really pop.

The lobs you’ve been seeing on celebs like Vanessa Hudgens and Kim Kardashian are about to get even shorter. Think: Chin-skimming bobs a la Emma Roberts. "For fall, we're going to see lengths moving up a bit,” says celebrity hair stylist Kendall Dorsey. "Think: sleek, short, blunt and no-fuss for a super chic look this fall. Part it down the center to really nail the classic look.” If you don’t have naturally straight strands, use a heat protectant like VOLOOM Very Airy Thermal Protection Mist, then straighten with an iron. Finish the look with a spritz of RICH Hair Care’s Argan De-Frizz Shine Mist, and you’ll be good to go.

‘90s beauty is back in a major way this season, and if you’ve always painted your pout with pinks or nudes, consider this the perfect time to start experimenting with some darker shades. Take your cue from Rihanna who rocked her latest Fenty Beauty shade to the Savage x Fenty fashion show. "We are obsessed with the new take on grunge lips shown on the FW18 runways,” says makeup artist Gabriel De Santino, founder of Gabriel Cosmetics. "Instead of black or dark violets, think: deep, rich red wines and brownish plums.” Some of our faves? Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Va Va Violet, and Gabriel Cosmetics Lipstick in Currant.

Turns out, disco isn’t dead after all... at least as it applies to beauty. "Not quite as wispy as Farah [Fawcett], but the '70s shag is back, baby,” says Kendall. "Have your stylist give you a lot of layers and flippy ends for a modern take on the shag.” For some Karlie Kloss levels of texture texture, give yourself an extra tousle on your midlengths and ends with a dollop of It's A 10 Miracle Texture Fiber.

"Look for unexpected color combinations like, Vibrant Orange and Navy,” says Gabriel, who loves the idea of pairing two high-contrast, complimentary colors for a bit of bonus boldness. Try combining them on your nails for some interesting nail art, or rocking navy eyeliner with a coral lipstick (like Beautycounter Color Outline Eye Pencil in Navy paired with e.l.f. Cosmetics Moisturizing Lipstick in Orange Dream), a la Lupita Nyong'o.

If you aren’t on the market for a fresh cut, not to worry — you can hop on board with one of fall’s biggest hair trends by way of embellishments, the way Janelle Monae did last year. "Add fancy bobby pins to your locks or even regular ones stacked to create a funky design — you can easily dress up or down this look,” says Kendall. "And don’t sleep on headbands – they’re back this season, too!” Try some embellished barrettes, like these glitzy ones from Claires, or a wrap-style headband that's perfect for all those dry shampoo days.

From runways to real life, glitter has been everywhere lately, and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon. "One of my favorite ways to wear it is just on top of shadow, from the inner corner over the lid just to the crease,” says celebrity makeup artist Mary Irwin. "It’s a little more subtle than all over the lid, but that looks amazing too.” Apply all over with your fingers (feel free to go all out, like the models at Tadashi Shoji), or downplay the glitz by using a liner brush to decorate your lash line. Irwin's a fan of Stila Glitter and Glow shadows, which come in dozens of colors and stay on forever. “You can go dancing in it and your makeup isn’t going anywhere," she promises

Cargo pants and Juicy Couture sweatsuits aren’t the only styles that we — and Selena Gomez — are stealing from the OC- era this season. “Inspired by the ever-popular side-swept bangs of the 2000s, this look is a little shaggy and wispy, giving you that cool, 'I don’t care look,’” says Kendall. "This is great news for those that can’t fully commit to a full fringe.” (#itme.)
Karwai Tang9/13Lit From Within Skin
As always, glowing skin is in... but this season there’s a slightly new twist on our forever fave look, modeled here by Zendaya. “Now it’s a fresh lit-from-within look, not that 'highlighted to space’ look,” says Mary, who notes that many models at fashion week came down the runway looking like they’d just left a facial (and the same understated style is showing up on red carpets, too). "I love to really hydrate skin with an oil and let it sink in before patting in foundation only where it’s needed, not all over the face,” she says, calling out Golden Door Golden Face Oil as one of her faves. "I’ll also use it to thin a foundation out that’s too heavy - just a few drops will make it act more like a tinted moisturizer."

The latest iteration of an updo is a far cry from the prom hair you may be used to. This season, it’s all about undone texture instead of something perfectly primped (perhaps we have Meghan Markle’s messy bun to thank?), which means updos in everyday life are officially a thing. To get Maika Monroe’s Emmys look, stylist Matthew Collins suggests starting by adding a texture mousse, like a L’Oréal Pro Volume Lift to wet hair, and blow drying your hair in the opposite direction of where you want your part (so you’ll have some added volume when you flip it back over). Sprinkle texture powder, like L’Oréal Pro Texture Dust in the back where you’ll fasten the look, then generously spritz some texture spray to add a little grit. Pull the sides back, and use your fingers to pull out the top to add a little height. Fasten the ponytail in the middle of your head, then split it in half and twist the pieces around each other before pinning them into place. Pull the bun apart for some added volume, then give it a final once-over with some hair spray.

The classic cat eye isn’t exactly new or revolutionary (fun fact: it's been around since the Cleopatra days) but there are more ways than ever to make it your own — just peep Letitia Wright's's upside-down version for proof. "From a little tiny flick to a dramatic graphic eye, your choices are endless,” says Mary. "If you’re a beginner at it, try making dots along the lash line to define where you want the line to start and end so that it’s even on both sides, and then just play connect the dots with your liner! Once you’re comfortable with that, it’s just a matter of practice before you’re a cat eye pro.” Her go-to product is the Surratt Auto Graphique Liquid Liner, which comes in four colors and has a brush inspired by Japanese Calligraphy brushes to give you lots of control for the perfect flick

"Helping out our mission of healthy hair for 2018, we’re seeing more natural, air-dried textures this season,” says Kendall. "A little wave-mist and you’re on your way to easy, sexy hair sans damaging heat.” Try The Ouai Wave Spray to get Gigi Hadid's fresh from the ocean texture, or OGX Moroccan Sea Salt Spray for a drugstore dupe that will make you feel like you're on a beach all year round.

Statement brows not quite enough oomph for you? Emily suggests giving your eyes an added pop of color with some gem-inspired shades, like sapphire, ruby, or Lana Condor's emerald (the Fenty Beauty Galaxy Palette has got you covered for all three, and then some). For a look of eye-popping intensity, dust your entire lid with shadow in one of these jewel tones, or for something more subtle use a swipe of liner on your lash and waterlines.
