In a city known for fashion as theater, Isabel Marant’s clothes stand out for their lack of pomp and circumstance. Marant doesn’t feign to design for Arabian princesses, nor does she throw four-figure price tags on shredded jeans. With her long chestnut locks, strong brows, and glowing complexion, newcomer Jacquelyn Jablonski is the picture of fresh-faced American beauty. So is it any wonder the New Jersey native landed her first big gig with Calvin Klein Jeans? "I remember getting a call from my booker after the casting, asking me to come by the agency," the nineteen-year-old recalls. "When I got there, everyone jumped out of their seats, yelling, ’Congratulations!’ with a box of cupcakes. It was the most exciting day for me." Not that things have let up much since. Jacquelyn hit her stride on the fall runways, walking for such fashion powerhouses as Balenciaga and Chanel—and the beach lover continues to reach new peaks. It was only a matter of time before designers delved into the nineties. God (and anyone who’s been to a store lately) knows the sequin-encrusted eighties have been done to death! So when Phoebe Philo stepped back onto the fashion stage at Céline last year, bringing with her a fresh take on minimalism, she unleashed the floodgates. At the fall shows, spikes, frills, and all manner of embellishment went virtually extinct. The piled-on accessories of yore? So two seasons ago! Coco Chanel’s long-heralded advice to remove one item from your outfit before leaving the house would this season be better reframed to advise losing all but one. "I’m a firm believer in the ’less is more’ mantra," says Teen Vogue intern Media Brecher. "It’s uncomplicated and classic." Not to be confused with easy or boring. "It actually forces you to be more creative," she says. "The focus is on fewer pieces, so you have to find a way to make those pieces shine." Instead of using accessories to add interest to an outfit, Media looks for clothing with a unique shape or quirk. Her fall musts include mod minis, tailored peacoats, and skinny black pants—some of which she can simply shop for in the back of her closet. Added bonus: A lot of the season’s standouts are classics, so you may already own them! Of course, there’s nothing like a refresher. "Céline’s gorgeous take on the camel coat haunts my dreams," Media admits. Even model Jessica Stam is in the mood to shop. She recently tweeted: "After re-watching Great Expectations, Gwyneth Paltrow has inspired me to step into Céline and reinvent my wardrobe." —J.K. de V.

With a crush of It denim flooding the jean pool, it’s no wonder today’s tastemakers are drifting back to the brand that started it all. Levi’s hangs tough with fresh releases like Workshops—a series of pop-up community spaces and pieces celebrating traditional craft—and Curve ID, a shape-conscious sizing system for finding that perfect fit (no gap in the back!). If the label has taken over Tinseltown, it’s not exactly news, though—legends like Marilyn Monroe have shared screen time with it for decades. Yet Hollywood was probably the furthest thing from Levi Strauss’ mind when the San Franciscan patented the jean in 1873, reinforcing denim work pants with copper rivets. It wasn’t until the 1950s, when the company’s cult-fave 501s were co-opted by rebellious teens, that jeans made the jump to wardrobe essential. 1. The Oversize Sweater
The extra-large sweater is one of fall’s key pieces—as well as the starting point for the grunge revival’s long silhouette—so cozy up to a chunky knit! Sentimental favorites, like this nubby cable-knit at Marc Jacobs (right), bring an added element of comfort. But the big, baggy fit means it’s no time to get nostalgic for crazy Crayola brights. Stick with soft neutrals or simple patterns instead.
2. The Maxi Skirt
Microminis have had their day! The skirt of the moment is lean, lu, and low to the ground. Though the maxi’s appeal lies partly in its floor-sweeping drama, nothing ruins an entrance like falling flat on your face, so look for a hem that skims the tops of your feet. Flat lace-up boots are a grunge classic, so what better way to round out the skirt’s easy shape? But strap into the clunky work boots of yesteryear, and you risk weighing down your look . . . in the nineties.
