In a Hair Rut? Try One Of These Edgy Fall Cuts
- 1/21
One of the great things about fall, other than all the warm spiced beverages, is the ability to wear your hair anyway you please without giving up midday and throwing your sweat-soaked strands in a bun or braids. Nothing against a good topknot or French braid, but we want options! If you’ve been itching for a chop but aren’t sure which way the styles will sway this season, we’ve sleuthed the fall hair trends with some helpful guidance from celebrity hairstylist, Rodney Cutler of Cutler Salons.

The Graphic Bob, Unstructured
Not all short cuts are created equal and, if you’re ready for a big chop, you’ve got options this fall. Modern short cuts this season incorporate texture and movement for a generally unfussy quality that updates your standbys. Not sure what that all adds up to? Cutler suggests, “It’s not about being severe and structured — rather flowy and bouncy.” Think of the structured bob made famous by Uma Thurman’s character in Pulp Fiction, or Anna Wintour taking a ride in a convertible for this cool roughed-up take on the classic ‘do.

Long, Loose Layers That Work With Fresh, Bouncy Texture
If you find yourself staring at your long hair in the mirror and thinking, "do something!" it may need some resuscitation. “Healthy, vibrant hair is a big trend for fall, moving away from the greasy, lived-in texture we have been seeing for a few years,” Cutler says. Snipping in some long loose layers will free up the bulk, giving you amazing dimension and movement (perfect for those breezy days), and you can keep your length. Just don’t load it up with too much salt spray for texture. “The idea here is to keep hair fresh, extremely shiny and bouncy by taking care of it and keeping it healthy,” Cutler advises. Consider this your redemption cut.

Shaggy Layers (Optional: Long Bangs)
If our fashion week predictions are on point, the shag is making a comeback…with a makeover. The modern shag is a lot softer than its predecessor, with pretty layers framing your face — and plenty of them. This is a great, naturally messy look that oozes rock 'n' roll cool, but with a bit of a softer edge. Not for nothing, it’s a great way to change up a mid-length style when you’re over last season’s lob. “Celebrities are growing out their lobs, and we are seeing more layers cut into the hair, as opposed to the blunt, straight cuts of last season,” Cutler notes. “This adds lightness and movement for a really youthful look.”

The “Undone Done” Hair
A bit wily to put your finger on, this “undone done” cut involves waves — but not too much wave — and texture — but not too much product. Simply put, it’s the definitive “I woke up like this” haircut, with your natural texture as the star. “Waves have definitely not gone away, but we are seeing a more controlled version. I still love the idea of ‘undone done’ hair, but the difference this season is going to be a matte texture that is not oversaturated with product,” says Cutler. Shape is super important with this one, because you don’t want your hair to start practicing trigonometry — making sure the ends aren’t too blunt is key. Now just get yourself a good light styling cream, and you’re good to go. R+Co’s Aircraft Pomade Mousse is the perfect texturizing goop that doesn’t weigh down hair — it is a mousse, after all.
