DIY Fringe Clutch
1/18what you need
American Apparel Large Leather Carry-All Pouch or another zippered clutch
Roughly 3 yards of fringe trim in three bright colors
Scissors
Ruler
Pencil
Fabric Glue
2/18Cut fringe
Start by cutting all of your fringe into pieces exactly the same length as the bag you're using. Keep the lengths separated by color.
3/18Mark out a pattern
Measure up 1/4" from the bottom of the bag, on both edges of your bag, and make a small mark with your pencil. Use the ruler to connect the 1/4" markings on both edges of the bag, and lightly draw a line along the length of the ruler. (Hint: if you're working with a dark bag, use a white colored pencil or chalk to make your markings.)
4/18Apply line of glue
Trace a light line of fabric glue along the pencil marking. Try to apply the glue as evenly as possible to avoid clumps.
5/18Continue marking out a pattern
Draw a line using the ruler to connect the two markings. You will repeat this step up the entire bag to ensure the the fringe is all evenly spaced and isn't crooked. Once you have drawn a line with the pencil, repeat step four and apply a light amount of glue along the pencil line.
6/18Begin second layer
Measure up 1/4" from the line of fringe you just laid down on both edges of the bag.
7/18Begin gluing fringe
Lay the top part (the solid part) of one of the pieces of fringe trim along the glue line, and press down to secure it to the glue.
8/18Apply second layer of fringe
Using a second color of fringe, lay that along the newest glue line.
9/18Apply third layer of fringe
Repeat the pencil marking and glue application above the second strip of glue, and lay down the third color of fringe.
10/18Apply the rest of the fringe
Repeat steps three through five, alternating colors in the same pattern, until you reach the top of the bag.
11/18Secure the fringe
Once the entire front part of the bag is covered in fringe, go back in with the glue, and apply small dots along the ends of the fringe. When the glue dries, it will prevent the fringe from unraveling. Allow the glue to dry completely, and repeat all steps on the other side of the bag.
12/18Apply glue to the tassel
Apply a small amount of glue in a line along the solid part of the 2" fringe.
13/18Begin making the tassel
Using a spare bit of fringe, cut off a 2" piece.
14/18Unravel fringe
Remove two strings from a different color of fringe by pulling on one of the tassels at the end of the line of fringe.
15/18Roll up the fringe
Place the ends of the strings in the glue at one end of the 2" segment, and roll the small segment of fringe up onto itself so that the glue is in the inside, like a cinnamon bun, with the two strings sticking out of the top.
16/18Fasten the tassel to the clutch
You've made a tassel! Loop one of the strings through the hole in the bag's zipper, and tie a small knot with the other string.
17/18Secure the tassel
Cut the ends of the strings off, secure with a dot of glue, and let your creation dry overnight.
