Get the Look: Katy Perry at the American Music Awards

If there's one thing we love more than Katy Perry's music, it's definitely her wild hair. We've all seen the pop singer sport some pretty crazy hairdos, from blue Bettie Page-inspired waves and the sculptural braided look in her E.T. music video to her blonde Smurfette dye job. Katy's colorful hair history proves that she's never afraid to take beauty risks! For the 2011 American Music Awards, she rocked a classic French twist updo but with a modern spin: it featured pastel pink locks and an iridescent Vivienne Westwood hair accessory. To get the lowdown on Katy's sophisticated and innovative look, we spoke with Frederic Fekkai celebrity stylist Renato Campora.

"I was inspired to create this style after seeing Katy's red carpet dress," says Campora. "I started by applying Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel to wet hair to give it a firm base. Then, I blow-dried the hair while brushing it out with a flat brush. Afterward, I used a one-inch curling iron throughout the hair to create body while giving it a sturdy foundation." After he completed these basic steps, he heavily teased the hair. "To create the final updo, I pushed the hair forward and wrapped the rest into a French twist," says Campora, who secured the look with hair pins. For the finishing touch, he wove the Vivienne Westwood hair accessory into Katy's hair and locked everything in place with Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray.

To balance out the singer's attention-grabbing hair, celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey kept the makeup pretty clean, only adding dramatically lined eyes and orange lips. "I went for this color, as opposed to a classic red, to pick up on some accents in Katy's dress," says Bailey, who used CoverGirl LipPerfection Lipcolor in Flame. "I perfected her skin by buffing on a liquid foundation with a large kabuki brush and dusting Guerlain Les Voilettes Loose Powder all over. I warmed up her complexion using Nars blush in Madly and then swirled Nars blush in Amour on just the apples of her cheeks for a little extra glow."

Bailey elongated Katy's eyes using Le Metier de Beaute Precision Liquid Liner. "I also applied two sets of false lashes and boosted them with two coats of CoverGirl LashBlast 24HR Mascara," he says. "Lastly, I lined her lower lash line with CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Violet Voltage, softening it by blending with a small shadow brush."
