10 Things That Need to Happen in the Gilmore Girls Revival
OY WITH THE POODLES ALREADY! It’s official! Gilmore Girls is being revived as a Netflix miniseries with four 90-minute episodes, and needless to say, all Stars Hollow fanatics are subsequently freaking out. EACH EPISODE of the new revival will represent a different season of the year and much of the original cast has signed on to reprise their roles, including Scott Patterson (Luke) and Keiko Agena (Lane). The miniseries will incorporate an 8-year time jump, and it’s been revealed that all of Rory’s old boyfriends will appear on the show. Phew. CONSIDERING THE fact that Gilmore Girls was such an incredible show to begin with, this revival has some pretty big shoes to fill. However, none of us were ready to say goodbye to Lorelai and Rory when the show ended in 2007, and the 7th season certainly left us with some questions. Okay, lots of questions. HERE ARE 10 things we want to see in the upcoming revival:
1/10We need a tribute to Richard Gilmore.
It was pretty devastating when Edward Hermann, who played Rory’s grandfather, passed away last year. It will be interesting to see how the show handles his absence, and what particular storyline will be created to explain the fact that Richard is no longer there. How will it affect Emily? Who will make drinks at Friday night dinners?
2/10Let’s get some Rory/Logan closure.
The last time we saw Logan, he proposed to Rory at graduation, and not only did she turn down a sparkly ring, but she also turned down a life in California with an avocado tree. Any guac-addict knows that this is serious business. But was that it for Rory and Logan? Did they keep in touch? Did they see each other after graduation? (Did she have to give back that Birkin bag?)
3/10What about Jess?
Jess Mariano, played by Milo Ventimiglia, started off as the elusive bad boy. However, later in the series, we learned that he published a book, got his life together, and became a hipster writer. It’s undeniable that there has always been an attraction between Rory and Jess, and some might argue that he’s ultimately the right guy for her. It will be interesting to see if Jess returns, and if the Rory/Jess shippers will see their ultimate dream come true.
4/10Hopefully Lorelai and Luke are married by now.
Luke and Lorelai were one of the most frustrating TV couples since Ross and Rachel. It was obvious since, like, Season 1 that they had feelings for one another, but it wasn’t until the start of Season 4 that they had their first kiss. They dated, got engaged, and broke up, and it seemed like they might be completely over, but the series ended on a hopeful note. So...where are they now? Are they married? Do they live in Lorelai’s house? Do they have kids?!
5/10SOOKIE. Please?
It’s seemed unlikely from the start that celeb A-lister Melissa McCarthy will not be reviving her role as Sookie St. James for the Netflix miniseries. Insert crying emoji here. But it’s hard to imagine Stars Hollow — or the Dragonfly Inn — without Lorelai’s best friend. Sookie added such a great energy to the show, and she was such a likeable character. For many of us, this was the first time we fell in love with Melissa McCarthy’s acting, even before she bought nine puppies in Bridesmaids. How great would it be if she showed up, even for one episode? We suppose we can keep hoping.
6/10Kirk’s latest business venture.
In every episode, Kirk had a different odd job. Sometimes he delivered flowers; other times he was an electrician. What will Kirk’s modern-day job be? Perhaps he’ll be a successful app developer. Or an Uber driver. Hopefully he is still with Lulu, and hopefully they’ve made it out of his mother’s house by now. I mean, it’s been 8 years. At least have a long-term stint in an Airbnb.
7/10We have a lot of questions about Rory’s career.
When Season 7 ended, Rory was about to begin working on Obama’s presidential campaign. Did she continue to work with Obama’s team after he was elected president? Is she still working in politics? If so, is she working with Clinton or Sanders now? (If we had to bet, we’d say that Rory just seems like a #HillYes girl.) Alternatively, is Rory working as a journalist for a major publication? We need so many details.
8/10Throwbacks. Lots of throwbacks.
While we definitely want to see our favorite characters in their new and current lives, we also need some Stars Hollow nostalgia. We’ll need a town meeting led by Taylor, and a gossip sesh with Miss Patty and Babette. We hope that Michel is still working at the Dragonfly Inn, and that he’s as grumpy as ever (and still obsessed with Celine Dion). Lane and Zack are hopefully still in a band with Gabe (maybe their kids are in the band too) and our hearts would seriously be broken if Paris doesn’t show up to say something sassy. Oh, and the infamous “la-la”s in each episode? Yeah, we need to sing along to those.
9/10There needs to be lots of Queen Emily.
While Emily Gilmore certainly had her unlikeable moments — remember when she threw that party for Rory and invited only boys to find her a “suitor”? — she always had a good heart deep down. She’s incredibly loyal, and always went to bat for her family. So what if she doesn’t know how to make frozen pizza or do pretty much anything for herself? She’s Emily Gilmore, and she’s fierce. We need a lot of Emily.
10/10Most importantly: we NEED to know those final four words.
Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has said many times that she wishes she had ended the series differently. She’s expressed that she’d planned four specific words that would be the last words of the series, but due to the production changes in the final season, those final four words were never spoken. However, Sherman-Palladino is back for the revival, so we’re hoping that we’ll finally get to learn what those mysterious four words are. Here’s a guess: is it, “Coffee coffee coffee coffee?”
