You’re never too old to add glitter in your wardrobe, or on your face, for that matter. There’s something about subtle, and even standout, sparkle that instantly takes a look to another, out-of-this-world level. But there are only so many ways to test-drive sparkly makeup, right? Lids, lips, swaths of highlighter? Think again. Turns out, come summertime, the combination of all-over-your-face glitter plus sunlight is the perfect accessory. But, before piling on sequins, there is an art to avoid looking like a complete disco ball. Makeup artist, William Murphy, teamed up with photographer, Rachel Rebibo, to bring us 6 graphic, galactic glitter makeup ideas that you’ve probably never tried before, but totally can pull off this season. The key? Keeping the rest of your vibe simple. Click through for all the shimmery inspo.

Winging It
Model Lameka Fox shows off exactly how to mix metals in this copper-meets-gold connection. “I was inspired by macro images of the shape of an eye,” explains William of how his sparkly vision came to be. To achieve a modern take on the cat eye, William started creating his shape of choice by drawing it on with a clear stick lip balm like Burt’s Bees. “The waxiness grips the glitter,” he says. Then, using a firm bristled shadow brush, he patted on the orange-y copper sparkles and used a Q-Tip to sharpen the edges. With glitter, comes fallout. So, William went back to clean up the area around Lameka’s eyes with a piece of scotch tape. Paired with dripping-in-gold nails, you’ll be the brightest star in the room.

Stop and Stare
With this much of a statement in the eyes a la a negative space liner moment, William stayed away from heavy foundation on the face. “I didn’t want Lameka to look too glammed up,” he explains. “Instead, I wanted it to feel like she just woke up like this, skin-wise.” So, he opted for DiorSkin Nude. “If you put it on over moisturizer, it sheers out even more. I used a fluffy brush to apply it and then buffed it out,” he says. Then, he topped off the lot with filled-in brows, a few coats of mascara, and lip balm. “Even when going for a no-makeup makeup nude face, the way to get structure is by going for mascara and an eyebrow,” he adds.

Feeling Blue
Once William got his creative juices flowing, he decided, why stop at the eye? That’s when this amazing, blue liner outline emerged. He drew his over-the-top design with lip balm and then pressed in blue glitter. To avoid irritating your face, William urges using makeup glitter. “Craft glitter is so sharp, it can scratch your skin and eyes. Instead, opt for makeup options. Once they get wet, they soften up so they won’t irritate you,” he explains. William loves Make Up For Ever’s selection of sparkles.

Glitter Tears
If you’re officially over glitter roots, you must try glitter tears — AKA the chicest way to cry. William went rogue for this unconventional beauty move. Manicurist Jasmin Cameron decided that typical glitter nail polish was too boring — instead she dipped Lameka’s fingers in pots of glitter. Because, obviously. William then took black glitter and went for a messy, Courtney Love-inspired under-eye smoky sparkle.

Golden Ticket
Finally nailed the art of contouring? Take it up a notch with a full-on gold streak. For this superhero-status strobe, William laid down Make Up For Ever gold cream and then went in with a brush to give detail with glitter. “The glitter pulls it all together,” he explains. But if this is a bit too head-turning for your everyday mood, William suggests taking loose gold or flesh-toned glitter and patting it onto the high points of your cheekbones. Think of it as the easiest way to try the trend.

Masked Marvel
“We spent so much time getting the glitter perfect, but at the end of the day it looked like a glitter factory exploded on her face,” jokes William. But in the best way possible. Although this all-that-glitters moment is more than just a wash of shadow, regardless of your personal glitter style, it can be a pain to take off. William advises that oil is better than water. “Glitter sticks to your face because of your natural oils,” he explains. “Oil cleansers will break that down and gently pull off the glitter. Foaming cleansers strip the skin too much, especially when you’re experimenting with sparkle as much as we were.” Now, go shine on.
