How the Fashion Industry Is Rallying for Gun Control
The fashion industry is stepping up when it comes to gun safety, donating huge sums of money and speaking out against gun violence. And, just this fall, Cynthia Rowley and Christian Siriano partnered with Everytown for Gun Control to create the Everytown Fashion Council, which the company explains, “will focus on engaging the power of the fashion community to support gun safety and help reduce the gun violence that kills over 90 Americans and injures hundreds every day.” From jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher to Italian fashion house Gucci, here are those in the industry who are stepping up when it comes to gun control.

At a fitting for his Fall 2018 Moschino show, Jeremy Scott proudly wore a white T-shirt with a piece of fabric safety-pinned to the front that read “Demand Gun Control Now." When asked by Teen Vogue what inspired the statement, Jeremy explained, “I was so inspired by the speech that Emma Gonzalez gave after the shooting — she was so articulate and passionate. I, like many, was struck by the power her voice conveyed. Her defiance to the President and the constructs of the governments compliance with the NRA inspired me to try to do anything I could to bring attention to the cause and show my support to these very intelligent and brave students who may be the tipping point for a problem that has gone on for far too long.”

Gucci donated $500,000 to gun safety efforts — more specifically to the March for Our Lives rally. At the time of the donation, the brand said the following in a statement: "We stand with March for Our Lives and the fearless students across the country who demand that their lives and safety become a priority. We have all been directly or indirectly impacted by these senseless tragedies."

Cynthia Rowley partnered with Everytown for Gun Safety to create a limited-edition white T-shirt with a gold safety pin on the chest. Cynthia explained to Teen Vogue, “I’ve been involved with Everytown for gun safety for two years actively marching and meeting with survivors. The statistics are so shocking. We have to do everything we can to let our elected officials know we are united in the demand for gun safety.”

Christian Siriano has joined Cynthia Rowley in her creation of Everytown Fashion Council, passionately stating to Teen Vogue, “Gun safety is one of the most important issues in America today, and I joined the Everytown Fashion Council because I could no longer just sit there and hope that someone else would say what I wanted to hear. I can add my voice to the chorus of people demanding immediate action from our elected officials.”

Jennifer Fisher Jewelry designed a four-piece capsule collection (in silver and gold) to help support gun safety. 100% of the proceeds will go towards Everytown for Gun Safety. Of the decision to design these special pieces, Jennifer told Teen Vogue, “When I had to sit at the breakfast table and try to explain to my kids that it's safe for them to go to school, I knew it was time to do something to try and help this cause.”

Prabal Gurung collaborated with Skylight in New York City to create a two-day art installation that honors all of the lives lost in the recent shootings in our country. Called "Freedom From Fear," the projection will include four beams of white light shot up into the air at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island to symbolize FDR's list of basic human rights, The Four Freedoms. Of the collaboration, Prabal explained to Teen Vogue, “We both felt the need to find a way to create a bigger conversation to drive change. It came together quite quickly and organically, and we are honored and proud to be able to use our platform to make people stop and think for a moment, to realize that enough is enough, and that staying silent puts us at fault as much as if we were the ones selling the guns.”

Proenza Schouler has launched two T-shirt styles in support of gun violence under their more casual label, PSWL. In long-sleeved white or short-sleeved black, each pictures a gun graphic with a bold cross through it, in varying colors on the front. 100% of all proceeds from the shirts will be donated to Everytown. When announcing the initiative via press release, the brand wrote that “We As an American company, we believe that every person, young and old, has the right to feel safe at all times.”
