Summer Hair Tips from Harry Josh

Try Beachy Waves
Beachy, messy waves are the epitome of summer and they look great on everyone. Gisele (a long time client of mine) is the poster girl for this look. To create this look at home, apply a mousse (like John Frieda’s Luxurious Volume Mousse) to create texture as you dry hair. Once dry, curl hair in sections but be sure to hold the iron vertically and wrap hair around it (like a tinsel). To finish, brush out to perfect the wave.

Try a Braid
Braids are a must for summer because they are so simple to create and really fashion forward. You can wear your hair down with a braid pulled back and pinned on one side or (my personal fave) you can create a side braid. Traditional braids are great for this, but I love a messy fishtail, too. Once you’ve got the braid in place and fastened just roughen it up a bit.

Pin with a Half Updos
One of the easiest styles for summer is to wear hair in a top knot. Think: haphazard gym bun, but made totally chic. Kate Bosworth wears this style often -- and she wears it well. It’s one of my top picks for summer because it takes less than 5 minutes to create and it keeps hair out of your face, off your neck. Fast, easy summer styles are a must!

Stay Natural
A lot of people get inspired to go dark during the summer but sometimes the sun can turn dark hair that’s been colored orange. I would avoid going darker than your natural shade in the warmer weather. Save the dark shades for fall and give your hair a break during the summer months!

Protect Your Hair
The hot summer sun and salty beach water are harsh on hair, especially if you’re styling every day (which you shouldn’t be, by the way!). With high humidity it can seem tough to find a look that won’t frizz the second you leave your house, but smooth, shiny hair is possible if you use the right products. I love John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Thermal Serum -- it’s the ultimate way to protect hair from the damage that causes frizz and color-fading. The serum is applied to wet or dry hair and works all day to protect and safeguard hair from the damaging effects of heat styling and UV exposure (a must for summer months!), leaving hair silky and vibrant.
