How To Make A Heart Appliqué Blazer
1/11What You Need
-Blazer (ours is from Brooks Brothers)
-1/4-yard colored tweed fabric
-1/4-yard single-sided fusible interfacing
-1/4-yard double-sided fusible interfacing (try the Stitch Witchery brand)
-A piece of construction paper
-Fray Check
-Permanent market
-Scissors
-Iron and ironing board
2/11Fold And Cut Paper
Fold the paper in half, and cut along the crease.
3/11Fold And Cut Once More
Place the paper over the elbow of the jacket, and fold it to mark the size of the elbow area. Cut along the crease.
4/11Trace Heart Onto Tweed
Trace the heart twice onto the "wrong" side of the tweed fabric. The wrong side is the less pretty backside that you don't want visible on your jacket. Cut out the fabric hearts.
5/11Trace And Cut Paper Heart
Fold the elbow-sized paper in half, and draw a half heart over the fold. Cut out the shape, and open to reveal your heart. Place it over the elbow to double-check that it fits.
6/11Apply Fray Check
Working on the wrong side of the tweed, squeeze Fray Check along the cut edge of each of the hearts. This will keep the threads from unraveling.
7/11Iron Interfacing Onto Tweed
Carefully place the single-sided interfacing on the wrong side of a tweed heart. The dotted textured side of the interfacing should be facing the tweed. Trim the interfacing if necessary if it does not fit inside the tweed.
With your iron on the hottest temperature allowed for your fabric, iron the interfacing onto the tweed for 15-30 seconds or until the two pieces have fused together. Repeat with the other tweed heart.
8/11Trace And Cut Interfacing
Lay the thin double-sided interfacing over the single-sided interfacing and trace two hearts again. You can trace onto both fabrics at once because the ink will go through onto both layers.
Loosely draw a slightly smaller heart inside each of these hearts. Cut out the smaller hearts. You should have four total, two of each kinds of interfacing.
9/11Place Interfacing On Elbow
Lay the blazer out so one of the sleeves is flat with the elbow facing up. Place one of the double-sided interfacing hearts over the elbow where you want your patch to be.
10/11Iron Tweed Heart Onto Elbow
Gently place the tweed heart over the double-sided interfacing. Iron for 15-30 seconds, or until the appliqué is fused into place. Repeat on the other elbow, being sure to place the appliqué in the same space.
