Holland Roden Invited Us to Get Ready with Her for the VMAs—Come See Her Transformation
She may play mean queen Lydia Martin on MTV's Teen Wolf, but actress Holland Roden couldn't be nicer IRL. Which is just one of the many reasons we're thrilled that the charming star (and her iconic red waves) are taking Hollywood by storm.
Perhaps the best place to stage a coup is, of course, the red carpet. And while Holland typically favors a more casual approach to fashion—she loves pairing sweatpants with a killer pair of booties—she took it to the next level at last night's VMAs with a sporty-chic dress by Milly and a fresh, youthful beauty vibe.
Even better? The star and her go-to hair and makeup artist Elle Leary invited us to join them for an exclusive sneak peak at Holland's getting-gorge process. Click through the slides to see how she primps.

Lined Eyes
Using Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate as an eyeshadow palette rather than a contouring kit, Leary swept the lighter, camel-colored cream across Holland’s lids. She then used the brick-like color to line the creases and underneath the eyes. Taking her Tarte SmolderEYES Amazonian Clay Waterproof Eyeliner in Golden Tiger’s Eye, Leary smudged the gilded liner all around the eyes to "add a little edginess."

A Glowing Complexion
Starting with a clean slate, stylist and makeup artist Elle Leary cleansed Holland’s pores with the Clarisonic Mia 1 Sonic Cleansing System. She added a healthy dose of hydration to the star’s skin with Embryolisse Hydra-Mat Emulsion—a matte moisturizer that prevents skin from looking too dewy. Leary then mid together Tom Ford Skin Illuminator and Jouer Anti-Blemish Matte Primer together on her hand before applying with a foundation brush, giving Holland a light, lustrous glow. To enhance her naturally sky-high cheekbones, Leary used three different shades of the Temptu AIRPod Spray Foundation. "Holland is absolutely obsessed with this foundation," Leary says. "It creates such a soft finish."

Setting the Waves
"On damp hair, I applied Eufora Beautifying Serum, starting mid-shaft and saturating the ends," Leary says. "It’s the perfect formula—it seals the hair cuticle, protecting it from heat while adding vitamins to lackluster strands." Using a round brush, Leary blew out Holland’s hair, then separated it into sections and put it into rollers. Holland’s hair set while Leary moved on to makeup.

Bouncy Waves
After releasing Holland’s curls from the rollers, Leary spritzed strands with a volumizing spray for instant fullness. She massaged powder into Holland’s roots to add lift to her hair. "My secret weapon is Eufora Powder Lift. It’s a weightless volumizer and texturizer that you can put right at the roots," Leary says. "Hair definitely won’t fall flat after that." Leary brushed out the curls with a Mason Pearson Boar Bristle and Nylon Hair Brush. "We didn’t want her hair to look too curly or stick-straight. The S-wave we created turned out to be the perfect in-between."

Lu Lashes
To enhance Holland’s already-lush lashes (the star says that she likes to take days off from wearing mascara to let her lashes breathe), Leary curled them a couple of times before having Holland swipe on Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara for extra volume. She then added another coat of Dior DiorShow Mascara to ensure they stayed looking voluminous all night long.

Her Look
"Holland always gets ultra-glam for the red carpet, so this time we wanted to add a little bit of edginess to her look," says stylist and makeup artist Elle Leary. "In creating her beauty look, I played off of the beautiful white mesh dress she chose to wear. The dress makes a bold statement on its own, and I didn't want her hair and makeup to take away from that."
