There’s nothing Teen Vogue likes better than a girl with beauty and brains — so is the case for 16-year-old model Shelby Hayes. “I’m a total bookworm,” she reveals. “My biggest inspirations are brilliant fantasy authors like J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien.” Hailing from Orange County, California, Shelby was discovered just last year while grocery shopping with her mother.
After her debut at Proenza Schouler’s spring 2016 show — during which she sashayed across the runway in a perforated black sleeveless dress (with enviable confidence and ease, no less) — designers and scouts were surprised to learn that she had signed her contract with The Lions, her agency, just two weeks prior. Since, she has walked for Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Marni, among others, and was featured in campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Coach, and Zara.
Though strikingly beautiful in her classic American girl way — big smile, sparkly eyes, open yet knowing expression — it’s her love of literature, passion for learning about how designers assemble collections, and consideration of the world around her that really makes you feel like you’re in the presence of a true to-be great. Get to know Shelby — she’s the one to watch!

You love to read. What have you read recently?
I just finished Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green. I really appreciated that the story didn't focus on the sexuality of the main characters, some of whom happened to be gay. I think that treating this trait as just a part of who a person is, as opposed to making it an important part of the plot, is a step toward normalizing the many ways we are.

What book has changed your life most of all?
The Harry Potter series was definitely a bridge between children's books and adult books for me. I’ve read and reread the whole series more than a few times over the years and always seem to gain something new from it.

How do you feel about fashion?
I never really knew much about fashion before I began modeling, and I feel extremely fortunate to be able to witness how deeply personal and creative it can be. I like it most when it’s not taken too seriously, and I think it’s best when people enjoy the process of creating it.

Who is your favorite model and why? What do you love about modeling, and what do you find challenging?
I admire the many models who aim to use their exposure to help others and bring awareness to the different causes they support. I mean, how cool is Cameron Russell to have given a TED talk?! Her environmental activism is pretty inspiring. But Joan Smalls comes to mind as a favorite since she was super kind to me backstage at the Marc Jacobs show last season, which was only my second-ever runway show.
The best thing about modeling is the people! Everyone is so incredibly passionate about what they're doing. It makes me realize that jobs can (and should be) enjoyable. The most challenging part about it is feeling like I spend more time in the air than on the ground sometimes. Traveling around the world is an incredible gift, but adjusting to different time zones can get hectic.

How would you describe your personal style?
My style is still evolving, but it’s currently dependent on my mood for the day. If I'm feeling cool and confident, I'll throw on a pair of dark jeans and a baggy shirt. If I'm feeling girly and pretty, I might find a flirty dress to pair with cute flats.
Camp Collection shirt (worn around neck), $64. L’Agent by Agent Provocateur bikini top, $92. Marco de Vincenzo pants. Golden Goose Deluxe Brand sneakers.

Is it true you’re a How I Met Your Mother fan (and that you like Barney Stinson)?
Barney Stinson is a manipulative womanizer who has multiple catchphrases and an extensive collection of suits. The contrast between the real-life Neil Patrick Harris and the character he plays on TV is very entertaining.

What music is your go-to?
Four years of theatre education left its mark on my musical taste; I love a good show tune, especially from Chicago and Les Miserables. I like how streaming services let you enter a song and suggest similar ones or introduce you to new music. But really, I love to sing any song I know the lyrics to.
Edun romper. Noir Jewelry earrings, $72. Giles & Brother beaded necklace, $295.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I really want to work with children in some capacity. I find psychology super interesting, so a children's therapist or even a psychiatrist seems like it might be the ideal job for me.
Anna Kosturova bikini top, $87. BCBG Max Azria top, $98. Marni earrings, $360.
