Why did you first decide to start your channel?
I had returned from studying abroad and ended up watching a lot of YouTube and I was immediately fascinated when I discovered that it wasn't just a random video site, it was entire community. Soon after, I watched my first beauty video. Let's just say I wasn't bored anymore for the rest of that summer! I first started making videos because I made a goal to do things that I was afraid of in order to get out of my shell because I'd always been a pretty shy person. Making a YouTube video was the perfect idea because I was absolutely terrified of being in front of a camera. Also, my interest in makeup and beauty products had grown significantly during the past year and I saw YouTube as a place where I could talk about these things and share tips with others. So in the fall of 2009 I jumped out of bed and decided to just seize the moment and go for it. I created my channel during the wee hours of the morning, posted a video of me curling my hair within the next few days, and that was it! When people started finding my videos, I was elated.

What's your beauty philosophy?
Makeup is a supplement, not a requirement. This philosophy of mine started when I was really insecure about my skin because I started getting acne in my early college years after all of my friends had already dealt with it, so I felt out of place. When I discovered full coverage foundation, I realized my acne and scars could be completely covered and that immediately made me feel better. However, it got to the point where I felt like I was becoming reliant on the makeup and just the thought of not wearing any freaked me out. I didn't like that feeling because I wanted to be comfortable in my own skin even if on the outside, my skin didn't look so great. I started to force myself to go out in public with no makeup on and realized it wasn't so bad. Being comfortable with no makeup on actually made me enjoy makeup even more because I saw it purely as a supplement that enhanced my life, but I wasn't relying on it as my sole source of confidence. Finding confidence from within and relying on that is the most self-empowering feeling I've ever experienced. It makes you feel free and in control of your life all at the same time.

What's your favorite hairstyle to create?
A simple side braid. It's my go-to hairstyle when I want to feel girly and put together, but I don't want to spend a ton of time on my hair. It keeps hair out of my face, is easy to touch-up throughout the day, and is perfect for second day hair or a bad hair day. It also looks super cute when you throw a hat on!
Do you have advice for a reader that wants to start a channel?
Go for it! Seize the moment and let yourself try something new. Getting through that is the biggest step and one of the most rewarding. After that, just be patient and allow yourself to grow as a person along with your channel. From the beginning my favorite thing about YouTube has been the community. My viewers and peers are people I respect, admire, and love. I think if you start with that attitude and keep it up, the sky's the limit!

Who are a few of your favorite beauty gurus and why do you love their channels?
Kandee Johnson is incredible! Her attitude and spirit towards life is so inspiring. You can just tell that she’s someone with a good heart, so when you combine that with amazing talent, it’s just...awesome! She’s been one of my favorites from the beginning and is such a pleasure to watch. Some of my other favorite girls are Stilababe09 and Zoella280390 because they are absolutely hilarious and give great tips on top of that! I also love watching FleurDeForce and Pixi2woo. They are two of my closest friends that I met through YouTube and I could sit here all day talking about their videos! They’re just all-around wonderful girls.

What’s in your makeup bag right now?
I have one of the new Nivea Lip Butters in Vanilla & Macadamia (which is beyond-all-words amazing), my Pomegranate Raspberry EOS Lip Balm, Nivea A Kiss of Milk and Honey Lip Balm, L’Oréal Paris Lipstick in Fairest Nude, and NYX Sugar Pie Lip Gloss. As you can probably tell, I love lip products! I also have First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream which I use regularly for dry hands, a Sweet Pea Mini Hand Sanitizer from Bath & Body Works, a little plastic container that holds bobby pins and hair ties, and nail polish remover pads which are great for on-the-go use.
What three beauty products do you find yourself buying over and over again?
Maybelline Dream Matte Powder because I have really oily skin and this stuff keeps the shine at bay without breaking me out. Maybelline New York The Falsies Flared Waterproof Mascara is my absolute fave! And Nars Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base is the only thing that will keep my eyeshadow in place and crease-free all day.
