The 6 Most Surprising Deaths in the History of Pretty Little Liars
[The season 6B premiere of Pretty Little Liars] (http://www.teenvogue.com/story/pretty-little-liars-season-6b-premiere-recap) ended with yet another funeral. We were plenty surprised about the death of Charlotte DiLaurentis, but let’s be honest: we should probably just be used to this kind of thing by now, right? I mean, the Liars definitely have at least 20 black dresses in their closets, so we should just expect a funeral every season from now on. This was certainly not the first time a Pretty Little Liars episode has made our jaws collectively drop by killing off a character unexpectedly. Let’s take a look at some of the most shocking deaths from the series’ past:
1/6Mona Vanderwaal
Okay, yes, technically Mona faked her death, but we believed that she was dead for a long time. Ali was even arrested and convicted of her murder! Fans of the show were all skeptical about her death at first because, real talk: until you see the body on this show, she’s not really dead. But as time went on, the PLL army became more and more convinced, especially as we witnessed Mike Montgomery’s grief. Of course, the joke was eventually on us when she turned around in the dollhouse in that blonde wig. But our certainty that she was dead only made that “gotcha!” reveal all the more worthwhile.
2/6Jessica DiLaurentis
This might have been the most surprising death on the series, because it literally came out of left field. (Or should I say…yard?) Jessica was engaging in some pretty shady behavior right before she was killed (remember her email? “I can’t protect you anymore.”) When we saw the flashback of Charlotte discovering her mom’s dead body in the 6A finale, her death became even more heartbreaking.
3/6Maya St. Germain
Maya’s death was so unexpected because there wasn’t a whole lot of mystery surrounding her...not until after she was gone, at least. In the episodes since Maya’s murder, fans have gone crazy trying to prove that she still might be alive. As the series goes on, that theory becomes less and less likely to come true, but PLL always seems to like to have the last laugh. Anything is possible.

Like Mona’s death, Toby’s death was another complete fake-out (just like when he was revealed to be “A.”) But don’t lie: there were a few minutes when we all believed that he was really gone. That moment when Spencer discovered the body with the “901 free at last” tattoo in the woods was literally one of the most traumatic seconds in the lives of Spoby fans everywhere.
5/6Ian Thomas
Although rarely talked about anymore among fans, Ian’s death is one of the most mysterious because we still don’t entirely know what happened to him. Yes, he was pushed from the bell tower by Ali, but we later learned that the fall didn’t kill him. His body was found later, with a note confessing to Ali’s murder...which, of course, is not true. Because this is during the time period when Mona was “A,” it’s actually still a big mystery as to who killed Ian. Could this come back and connect to the new big bad? Could the N.A.T. Club be involved? So many questions.
6/6Detective Wilden
The sub-plot of Wilden’s death, like Ian’s, came in waves. We first see Ashley Marin run over Wilden with her car, which was surprising enough. (Although, let’s be honest, we all cheered when she did that. Ugh, Wilden.) However, our victory didn’t last for long, as it became clear that the Liars were soon going to be blamed for his death. Wilden’s murder opened an entirely new can of worms for the liars, with the introduction of Detective Holbrook, Ashley’s arrest, and the rise of Jenna and Shauna. When there’s one funeral, there’s a thousand more problems.
