Best Movies Premiering in 2017
As we get ready to say goodbye to 2016 (byyyeeee!) and head into the New Year, it’s clear that we have a lot to look forward to. For starters, it won’t be 2016 anymore. But beyond that, 2017 is also going to bring us some pretty fabulous movies. Right off the bat, we’re getting a new thriller from M. Night Shyamalan in January, followed by another Lego Movie in February. March is an intense month, as it will bring us Beauty and the Beast as well as Logan, and the spring and summer are basically epic.
We’ve rounded up 33 of next year’s hottest movies so you can mark your calendars accordingly. You won’t want to miss these.
1/34Sleepless (January)
What better way to kick off 2017 than with a thriller? Sleepless tells the story of a police officer whose son gets kidnapped, and he has to lead an investigation to find him. The film stars Jamie Foxx, along with Gabrielle Union and Michelle Monaghan.
2/34Split (January)
Split, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, is the latest from M. Night Shyamalan. It centers around three girls who are kidnapped by a man with 24 personalities.
3/34Patriot’s Day (January)
Patriot’s Day follows the real-life account of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. It stars Mark Wahlberg, J.K. Simmons, John Goodman, and Kevin Bacon.
4/34A Dog’s Purpose (January)
Calling all dog lovers! A Dog’s Purpose follows a dog as he...you guessed it...struggles to find his purpose. It features Frozen’s Josh Gad as the dog’s voice.
5/34The Salesman (January)
The Salesman is centered around an Iranian couple, Ranaa and Emad, who are forced to leave their home. They are actors, rehearsing for a production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, and find themselves with no other choice but to stay with one of their fellow co-stars. However, things quickly turn dark when they realize that their new housemates have some secrets.
6/34The Space Between Us (February)
The Space Between Us follows Gardner, played by Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’s Asa Butterfield, who is the first human to ever be born on Mars. Gardner begins to feel curious about Earth, and he develops an online friendship with a girl living in Colorado (played by Britt Robertson). Sci-fi and romance? Yes please!
7/34I Am Not Your Negro (February)
This powerful documentary, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, was born from the unfinished novel of James Baldwin called Remember This House. The documentary talks about race in modern America, and also touches upon the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
8/34Rings (February)
She’s baaaaaack. The OG terrifying ghost/demon/dead girl, Samara, is back to terrorize another unlucky victim who will face her ultimate fate in “7 daaaayyyyssss.”
9/34The Lego Batman Movie (February)
Sing it with us – ”Everything is awesome!!! Everything is cool when you’re part of a team!” If you loved the first movie – obviously this one is a must-see.
10/34Tulip Fever (February)
Set in 17th century Amsterdam, Tulip Fever is a romance and it stars Alicia Vikander, Cara Delevingne, Christoph Waltz, and Zach Galifianakis. Yes. Please.
11/34Beauty and the Beast (March)
We’re pretty sure we couldn’t be more excited for this movie if we tried. Not only is it one of our all-time favorite classics, but Emma Watson as Belle is going to be everything.
12/34Logan (March)
Just when you weren’t sure if we needed another X-Men movie, this film comes around. Logan is set in the future and features a little girl with powers very similar to Wolverine’s.
13/34Table 19 (March)
Starring Anna Kendrick, Table 19 is a comedy that tells the story of Eloise, a woman who was just fired from being maid of honor at a wedding. She’s now demoted to “Table 19” with five other guests she doesn’t know. Awk-ward.
14/34The Shack (March)
This drama is centered around a man whose daughter had been kidnapped – and most likely murdered. When he receives a note from possibly a higher power, telling him to return to “The Shack” where his daughter’s murder allegedly took place, he embarks on a strange and mysterious journey. The Shack stars Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer.
15/34Kong: Skull Island (March)
If you’ve ever wondered where King Kong came from, this movie’s got your back. Starring Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston (!!) this film tells the origin story of King Kong.
16/34Power Rangers (March)
Throw it back to your childhood with the upcoming Power Rangers movie. This film features Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks as Zordon and Rita, respectively, and also stars one of Asia’s biggest names, Ludi Lin as Zack, the Black Ranger, and Becky G as the Yellow Ranger.
17/34Smurfs: The Lost Village (April)
Who doesn’t want another Smurfs movie? This one features voices such as Demi Lovato and Jack McBrayer.
18/34The Fate of the Furious (April)
The Fast & Furious movies are the gift that keeps on giving. Of course there’s another one. But it looks like this one doesn’t have any old footage of Paul Walker (RIP).
19/34Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May)
Not gonna lie, we’re mostly excited for this movie because of Baby Groot (soooo cute, or should we say, soooo groot!) And, okay, Chris Pratt too.
20/34Everything, Everything (May)
Based on the YA novel by Nicola Yoon, Everything, Everything tells the story of Maddy, a teen who has lived a life of isolation because she’s allergic to the entire world. But everything changes when a cute boy moves next door. This movie stars Amandla Stenberg, and we cannot WAIT.
21/34Baywatch (May)
The remake of the classic TV show has all of our attention (hello, Zac Efron). We’re also stoked to see Priyanka Chopra as one of the main characters.
22/34Wonder Woman (June)
Sound the girl power alarm. Wonder Woman is undoubtedly going to be one of the highlights of 2017, and we can’t wait to see Gal Gadot crush it with this iconic role.
23/34The Book of Henry (June)
In The Book of Henry, Jacob Tremblay plays Peter, a child genius. This movie also stars Maddie Ziegler, Sarah Silverman, and Naomi Watts.
24/34Transformers: The Last Knight (June)
Yep, 2017 will bring another Transformers movie. This one doesn’t have Shia LaBeouf, but it does feature Isabela Moner, who appeared in the Legends of the Hidden Temple movie earlier this year.
25/34Spider-Man: Homecoming (July)
Spider-Man: Homecoming has created a lot of suspense already, as we’re still dying to know who Zendaya actually plays in this movie. Luckily, come July of next year, we’ll finally find out.
26/34The Dark Tower (July)
Based on the novel by Stephen King, The Dark Tower tells the story of Roland Deschain (played by Idris Elba) who is in search of a mysterious dark tower in hopes that it will help save the world.
27/34Flatliners (September)
Starring Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna, and Ellen Page, Flatliners is a thriller about medical students who experiment on near-death experiences. Naturally, this ends up pretty dark pretty quickly.
28/34Blade Runner 2049 (October)
This installment of the Blade Runner franchise takes place 30 years after the first film, and stars Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Harrison Ford, and Robin Wright.
29/34Insidious: Chapter 4 (October)
Naturally, another Halloween will bring another chapter of the Insidious movies. Prepare to be scared accordingly.
30/34Justice League (November)
We’re gonna need a flow chart to keep track of all the superheroes in this movie. Justice League features Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Superman (Henry Cavill), and Lois Lane (Amy Adams). Whew.
31/34Star Wars: Episode VIII (December)
Sure, Rogue One just came out, but we’re already counting the days until Star Wars: Episode VIII is released. The next installment will follow Rey, Finn, Poe, and Luke on their adventures. And it will also contain footage of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. Thank goodness.
32/34Jumanji (December)
If you still watch the OG Jumanji on the reg (and you’re not alone), this movie is definitely going to be on your calendar in 2017. This new adventure stars The Rock, Kevin Hart, Alex Wolff, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas (!!!).
33/34Pitch Perfect 3 (December)
As if we weren’t already excited for Pitch Perfect 3, Ruby Rose is joining the ensemble this time around. Yes. Please.
