New Year, New Coat! Cozy up to This Easy DIY
1/16What You Need
-A peacoat
-1 1/2" or 2" leather or imitation leather trim
-Wax paper
-Washable fabric glue
-Scissors
-Iron and ironing board
2/16Arrange the Wax Paper
Hold the fold in place and cover the trim with a piece of wax paper.
3/16Cut the Trim
Lay the peacoat flat and arrange the trim along the edge of the pocket. Cut the trim to the length of the pocket opening.
4/16Fold the Trim
Fold the trim in half lengthwise, with the wrong side of the trim on the inside. The wrong side is the less-finished side—you don't want that to show in the finished piece.
5/16Apply Glue
Unfold the trim, and apply glue to the wrong side.
6/16Distribute the Glue
Gently fold the trim again, then unfold it, spreading the glue evenly across the fabric.
7/16Apply Heat
Iron the trim on the lowest setting suitable for your fabric. Press firmly to set the fold.
8/16Place the Trim
Very carefully, slide the trim inside the pocket, just as deep as the fold.
9/16Apply the Trim
Fold the trim over the front edge of the pocket and press firmly. Hold for a minute while the glue sets.
10/16Continue Applying the Trim
Repeat the process with the other pocket.
11/16Place the Collar Trim
Fold, iron, and apply glue to the trim. When placing the trim on the collar, start at one end, and fold the trim around the collar.
12/16Prepare the Collar Trim
Follow the same technique on the coat's collar. Measure and cut the trim by placing it against the collar.
13/16Apply the Collar Trim
Every few inches, hold the trim firmly in place, moving around the curve of the collar.
14/16Cut the Edge Trim
For the front edge of the collar and the top of the lapels, measure, cut, and fold the piece as before. Cut a 45 degree angle in from the folded edge.
15/16Apply the Final Trim
Glue the piece in place with the angle at the corner. The angled edge will overlap the long collar, creating a nicely-finished corner.
