14 Indie Plus-Size Brands That Are Actually Stylish

When I first started shopping for plus-size clothes, there weren’t many brands to choose from. And this was only six years ago. At the time, only a handful of retailers carried options that not only fit my body but were also fashion-forward and chic. Floral print fatigue was certainly a recurring issue during this period. Thankfully, the plus-size fashion landscape has changed tremendously since then, thanks to the influx of independent brands entering the market and desperately filling a style void for people like myself. Now, instead of feeling underwhelmed by the lack of variety available, shopping has once again become a fun experience for me that brings immense joy. Beyoncé-approved brand Chromat is a gamechanger. For one, founder Becca McCharen-Tran always uses diverse models in her runway show, both in race and body type. And on the design level, their lingerie pieces are architectural works of art that truly look great on whoever wears them. Their swimwear and sportswear are also worth checking out.

Everything Premme has released since launching last year has been playful and well-designed. Designers Gabi Gregg and Nicolette Mason also make it a point to showcase various models of all body types on the site, not just the typical curvy model with a hourglass figure. It’s no wonder people like actress Danielle Brooks and Rihanna’s makeup artist, Priscilla Ono, can’t get enough. Just remember to act quickly if you see something on the site that you like. Beloved accessories brand Stella & Dot has branched out into ready-to-wear. Like everything else they sell, their clothes are on-trend and reasonably priced. The new spring/summer collection, in particular, has all of the easygoing, flowing dresses you need for your vacation or picnic outing.

Tanya Taylor’s eponymous line is the ultimate romantic fantasy with its gorgeous prints and flirty silhouettes. When she announced last year that the brand would now offer extended sizes, the plus-size community was overjoyed. Her pieces tend to be on the pricier side but the quality of the fabrics and thoughtful designs make them worth the investment. Plus, the brand is constantly hosting sales.

No two human beings have the exact same proportions, so why aren’t there more brands offering bespoke clothing for people at a reasonable price point, especially plus-size customers? That’s the premise on which SmartGlamour was created. Spearheaded by Mallorie Dunn, the company produces affordable and individualized apparel made to fit you perfectly.

Headquartered in Portland, the brand is most known for their widely-popular Wild Feminist t-shirt that’s been worn by a bevy of celebrities, including Kristen Stewart and Ellen Page. But while I love a good feminist slogan t-shirt and the rest of their size-inclusive politically-driven clothing, what makes Wildfang really stand out amongst the rest is their commitment to financially supporting different causes and organizations furthering the feminist movement such as Planned Parenthood. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.
