“Protest!” Captures The People and Places of Resistance From The 1930s to Today

The art of protesting — and the art inspired by protest — have long been inseparable and invaluable components of the human experience. While a lone man standing before a herd of tanks can change the course of a nation’s history, the perfect image of such a protest can change the world’s. That image was Stuart Franklin’s groundbreaking 1989 picture known as “Tank Man," just one of many important works included in Magnum Photos’ New York exhibition, “Protest!”, which will be on display at the Milk Gallery until July 30th as part of Magnum’s 70th anniversary events. From Eve Arnold’s 1962 portrait of civil rights activist Malcolm X to Larry Towell’s 2016 picture of the Sioux protest camp in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, “Protest!” features a body of work diverse in terms of both time and place, though united by its depiction of the enduringly timely theme of resistance.
