'Riverdale' Season 2: What to Expect from the CW Show
Who’s excited for the second season of Riverdale to premiere? This gal! The CW’s hit show, which is based on the classic characters from the Archie comics, kicks off its second season on October 11th. To prepare, we’ve been eating up all the news we can find about the upcoming storyline, because we have so many questions. (Did we mention that it will feature 22 episodes instead of 13? Good things come to those who wait… so, to you and me!) Will #Varchie stay together? Will zombies invade? Will the show mine the comics for even more plot twists and turns? Here is everything we know about Riverdale, season two — so far.
1/10There's a new girl in town.
Vanessa Morgan will join the show as the Southside Serpents’ first girl gang member: Toni Topaz. According to Vanessa, Toni (who is bisexual in the comics) might stir up some trouble for #Bughead, sure to be compounded by the fact that Betty and Jughead are now attending different high schools and are separated for most of the day. What’s more, Jughead is delving deeper into the Serpent lifestyle (as evidenced when he accepted his official Serpents jacket in the season one finale). However Toni comes to interact with the Riverdale kids, here’s hoping the show represents her bisexuality in a sensitive and responsible way. It does seem — thus far — that aside from the havoc Toni’s presence might wreak, #Bughead will still be together when season two starts, which might mean that the show won’t be exploring Jughead’s canon asexual identity just yet.
2/10Josie joins the Vixens?
An Instagram photo posted by Camila Mendes appears to show Cheryl Blossom’s tightly run ship of a cheerleading dance squad adding one new addition…Josie McCoy! All four ladies are in the River Vixens classic practice uniform. Camila captioned the photo “vixens,” so it does look like Josie’s joining the team. It seems like cheerleading would cut into Pussycats rehearsal time, but if Josie hanging out with B, V, and C more means more screen time for Ashleigh Murray, we’re here for it!
3/10The Serpents are Lawyering Up
Brit Morgan, of True Blood fame, is joining the Riverdale cast as the Serpents’ “backroom lawyer” who prefers favors instead of monetary payment. Smells like we’re in for some legal drama — as well as some interesting I.O.Us!
4/10Archie’s Going Full Revenge
Archie is on defense in the season two teaser trailer, ready for the masked man who shot his father (FRED ANDREWS, ARE YOU OKAY???) to possibly come back for him. There’s something very tense about the way Arch’s tapping that baseball bat on the ground. And in the latest season two promo spot, it looks like Archie has a gun in hand! Methinks the town’s golden boy is about to become acquainted with the dark side…
5/10Cheryl’s Taking the Reins of the Blossom Family
The last shot of the season two teaser trailer is Cheryl leaning over her mother, who’s wrapped in gauze (presumably from the fire Cheryl set at Thornhill), and telling her that “things will be different now…you’ll see.” Is it just me, or does Cheryl seem a little menacing toward her mommy dearest? (Not
6/10Veronica’s Ex Comes to Visit
Looks like there might be stormy seas ahead for Veronica and Archie, who DTR’d in the season one finale, in the form of Veronica’s ex-boyfriend from New York. Graham Phillips will appear in two episodes of Riverdale’s second season as Nick St. Clair, and I’m willing to bet his arrival in town won’t be warmly welcome by at least one half of the #Varchie duo. And honestly? He sounds like kind of a jerk. Team Archie all the way!
7/10…And Supergirl Might, Too!
Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted a photo of Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl, in full costume, sitting at Pop’s with Betty and Veronica, and teased a crossover episode in his caption. I’ll take it! The kids in Riverdale could really use a superhero right about now.
8/10Betty’s Involved in Another Mystery
But this time she’ll be the focal point and it will take her to a dark place, personally. Perhaps it involves her searching for her long-lost brother — whom we may have already met? Or maybe she’ll get wrapped up in the Serpents with Jughead. Who knows what lies ahead, but since Betty is basically Riverdale’s Nancy Drew, I’m sure she’ll be able to crack whatever case comes her way.
9/10Love Is In the Air for Cheryl
Looks like Cheryl Blossom is getting a love interest, one that will hopefully go a little deeper than her brief maple syrup-flavored fling with Archie in season one. According to the actress who plays Cheryl, Madelaine Petsch, Cheryl’s love interest will defy people’s expectations, which sounds like some good, fun television to me.
10/10Kevin + Joaquin Forever
Though Southside Serpent Joaquin left town in the season one finale to escape some of the heat that was coming down on the Serpents, it looks like all is not lost for him and Kevin Keller. Please, let it be true! I need more Joaquin and Kevin in my life and on my TV screen. Now that Casey Cott, who plays Kevin, is a series regular, there’s even more opportunity for the sheriff’s son and the local gang member to figure out their relationship. Let that old-fashioned bus bring Joaquin back to town, stat!
