Spring 2012 Runway Trend: Refined Workwear

Sharp, crisp, stand-alone shapes at Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, Kenzo and Céline were accented by details including big patch pockets, thick zippers, utilitarian hooks and work belts. Designers seemed to take inspiration from painters and carpenters, showing stiff twill shirting, oversized pants, and boiler suits anchored in neutral tones with elements of navy, cobalt blue, cherry red and green.

These workwear-influenced pieces can be tough to pull off without looking like you're channeling a mechanic, so start off wearing one piece at a time to keep things from getting too literal. Try a pair of skinny-legged pants with cargo pockets or a button-down jacket with snaps and drawstrings. Keep shapes boxy and oversized, and stick to a neutral color palette with just one or two pops of color. Sturdy materials are also key—try khaki or a stiff linen to stay true to this trend's utilitarian roots.
