Sky Ferreira and Herieth Paul on Being The Faces of CK One Shock
I'm not sure if there has ever been an ad campaign more iconic than the hugely popular 1995 TV spots for the original CK One fragrance, featuring a 21-year-old Kate Moss. The ads, which helped launch Kate into supermodel stardom, perfectly represented the minimalist-grunge aesthetic of the early '90s—a trend that, incidentally, made a comeback on the fall runways this year.
CK One Shock, which launched in September, is the latest addition to the CK One line, and the ads feature a whole new crop of gorgeous up-and-comers. Last week I got the chance to chat with two of them: singer/songwriter/model/ muse/ fave!) Herieth Paul. Read on to find out all about their style and beauty inspirations, and what it was like to shoot the commercial!

Teen Vogue: What was it like shooting the CK One Shock campaign?
Sky Ferreira: I was really excited to work with Steven Meisel again. He's amazing! It was a little bit awkward at first—it's weird to just dance in front of a camera. It took a while to get into it, but then it was OK. When I was shooting with other people, it was way less awkward! Also, a lot of the other people in the campaign are real models, and I'm definitely not, so they all knew what they were doing! I didn't know what I was doing at all. Lara Stone was in the video too, so that was intimidating!
Teen Vogue: I bet! What is she like?
Sky Ferreira: She's so cool. She's really down-to-earth and supersmart.

Teen Vogue: You're coming off of the tail end of fashion month. What were some of the highlights for you?
Sky Ferreira: I actually just got back from Paris last night. It was all crazy. I loved the Givenchy show in Paris. The Calvin Klein show was great too. I got to go to Kanye West's show in Paris too, which was crazy!
Teen Vogue: You kicked off that month by performing at Teen Vogue's Fashion's Night Out Block Party. You sounded great!
Sky Ferreira: Thanks, it was so much fun! I love Amy Astley and Andrew Bevan. I think Teen Vogue was one of the first magazines I ever met with. Honestly, I didn't think anyone would know who I was, but as soon as I came off the stage, I got bum-rushed! It was awesome.
Teen Vogue: You have a terrific sense of style. How would you describe it?
Sky Ferreira: Well, even though I look really neat today, my style is pretty messy. I wear a lot of t-shirts.

Teen Vogue: Who are some of your music and style inspirations?
Sky Ferreira: I think Debbie Harry, from Blondie, is a big one. I love her music and her style. Also Souxie Soux and Jane Birkin, even though she's superfeminine. I actually draw a lot of style inspiration from men: Kurt Cobain is my favorite—when I discovered Nirvana in middle school, that was it. Since then, that's been how I've wanted to dress. My hairstyle is really inspired by him too!
Teen Vogue: What are some items you're looking forward to wearing this fall?
Sky Ferreira: I'm excited to buy more jeans. I'm also looking forward to wearing my jackets again. I have this leather jacket that I love; I never really grew out of the leather jacket thing. Mine is lined on the inside and it just fits so perfectly, and I'm not really sure how that happened since it's vintage. I got it at the store Reformation in New York City—I saved up all my money and finally bought it one day. It's definitely one of the top five things in my closet.
Teen Vogue: What are your other must-haves?
Sky Ferreira: I have a favorite t-shirt—a Harley Davidson one that's so worn in and fits so well. I always wear that. I also have these black boots that I got at Brick Lane in London; I got them, like, two years ago but I wear them all the time. My essentials are the really simple things that just go with everything.

Teen Vogue: What advice do you have for girls who want to cultivate their own personal style?
Sky Ferreira: You don't really have to spend a lot of money to do it. I didn't for a long time, and even when I started making more money, I still didn't spend it on clothes. When I do buy fancy things, though, I really like Miu Miu. I find a lot of really good things at thrift stores, but I think LA and smaller cities are better for that than New York. New York is so expensive! Whenever I'm in smaller cities, I always like to go to thrift stores. I also steal clothes from my boyfriend!
Teen Vogue: What advice do you have for girls who want to go into music or be an artist?
Sky Ferreira: You just have to start doing whatever it is you want to do. Do whatever you can to get yourself out there. Focus on your music or art, because that's what really matters. Even though I've been doing a lot of fashion stuff, my music is still what comes first. I took a little bit of a break to figure out where I wanted to go, musically. And now that I've figured it out, I feel a lot better. I've started working on my new album, which is great. I just felt like since I'm not sixteen anymore, I shouldn't be singing about the same things. My sound is still poppy, but it's moving more in the direction of Blondie. I'll always love dance music, but that's just not where my head is at right now.

Teen Vogue: You also have the most amazing hair! What hair products do you use?
Sky Ferreira: I only wash my hair twice a week at most. My hair is so dry, thick, and coarse, so not washing it often helps. I use a lot of dry shampoo in between washings. I love Mane 'n Tail conditioner, actually—it really works! My mom is a hairdresser and she always had me use it when I was a little girl. It's why my hair grows so fast; I just got a trim, but I feel like it immediately grew two inches.
Teen Vogue: What other beauty products do you like?
Sky Ferreira: I love CK One! I also really like to mix lipsticks together. I use Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl a lot. I also love Russian Red by MAC. I like matte lip colors, because my hair just gets stuck in gloss. For eyeliner, if I want it to look clean I use Make Up For Ever's Aqua Cream Liner with a brush—it stays on forever! For something smudgier, I'll use a CoverGirl eyeliner. CoverGirl is the best—it's so affordable and you can buy it anywhere.

Teen Vogue: How did you get discovered?
Herieth Paul: When I was thirteen, I walked into a modeling agency in Ottowa. (I live in Canada, but I'm originally from Tanzania, Africa.) I wanted to be an actress! I walked in and told one of the agents, Angie, that I wanted to act. She said no because she wanted me to model instead, but I was really persistent! So she took out a video camera, put it in my face, and said, "OK! Do something! Act! Say something!"—and I completely froze! So I tried modeling and completely fell in love with it.
Teen Vogue: That's so brave! Was your mom supportive?
Herieth Paul: That morning, I think I woke my mother up at 7 am! She didn't like the idea at first because she thought she would have to pay a ton of money for acting classes, but I was like, "Mom, do you really want me living on your couch for the rest of my life?"
Teen Vogue: You walked in a ton of shows this season. What were some of the highlights for you?
Herieth Paul: Vera Wang was definitely a highlight! I saw Beyonce backstage and freaked out. I was like, "Hey B!" and waved at her like I knew her! She was very polite, though, and she smiled very nicely at me.

Teen Vogue: What have been some of your favorite magazine shoots?
Herieth Paul: I loved shooting for Teen Vogue! The team was amazing, and we got to shoot in Los Angeles, which was great. And the food on set was awesome!
Teen Vogue: What's your favorite guilty pleasure?
Herieth Paul: I love popcorn with melted chocolate!
Teen Vogue: Yum! How would you describe your personal style?
Herieth Paul: My style is just... Herieth! When I wake up, I think, "OK, this is how I'm feeling, so this is what I'm wearing today." I really like fur, so I'm looking forward to wearing some fur this winter. I also love hats! I have a big hat collection.
Teen Vogue: What are some of your favorite shops in New York?
Herieth Paul: I love shopping in Soho and at vintage stores. There is so much cute vintage stuff. A lot of times I'll find something that I love, and my mom will have something similar that's from the '80s in her closet; but when I find it in a store, it's usually cuter than what my mom has!

Teen Vogue: You're still in school in Canada. What's it like balancing schoolwork with your career?
Herieth Paul: You would think it would be hard, but my mom and my teachers actually make it very easy for me. When I have to go away for work, they put together a big packet of everything I need to do, and I just do it on my own while I'm gone.
Teen Vogue: Since you're still in high school, have you given any thought to what you'll wear to prom?
Herieth Paul: I'm going to prom next year! Oh man, it's going to be such a hard choice to pick a designer. I did the Givenchy resort show last season, and at the end of the show I told them that I needed the dress I was wearing for prom. They were all like, "Uh, yeah... OK," and they said we'll talk about it. So I'm going to hold them to that!

Teen Vogue: Did your friends freak out when they first saw you in the CK One Shock campaign?
Herieth Paul: They did! We were all over at my house watching TV, and the commercial came on after one of our favorite shows. My friends were all, "Oh my god!" and they called everyone at school to see if they saw it. I played it cool, though! I was like, "Oh yeah, it's nothing!"
Teen Vogue: In addition to the CK One Shock fragrance, what are your other beauty must-haves?
Herieth Paul: I use so much moisturizer, both before bed and during the day. I also drink a lot of water, and I try not to wear any makeup because I've heard it can be bad for your skin.

Teen Vogue: What advice do you have for aspiring models?
Herieth Paul: Don't give up on your dreams! You have to just go for it. Also, you have to try something to know if you really like it. You might think you like something, but then you may figure out that you actually don't, like me with acting.
Teen Vogue: Do you think you might give acting another shot in the future?
Herieth Paul: Maybe. But modeling is definitely my main focus!
