Independence Day: Stars Who Style Themselves

Never has the phrase "I put my pants on one leg at a time" been as apt a way to express one's status as a regular Joe as it has in the age of the celebrity stylist. Over the past two decades, as the role of Hollywood wardrobe consultant has evolved from optional behind-the-scenes counselor to front-and-center personality (The Rachel Zoe Project anyone?), it has seemed that the only ones dressing themselves were regular Joes.

But now it looks like the tide might again be turning: Blake Lively—whose outfits have won the praise of Michael Kors and Karl Lagerfeld—made headlines when she revealed the brains behind those head-turning ensembles to Glamour magazine in July: herself. "I'd go to fashion shows and call my publicist and say, 'Can I wear that?' I think I became my own stylist by not knowing any better," she said."

And Blake isn't the only one. Style-savvy stars such as Chloe Grace Moretz, Diane Kruger, Sienna Miller, and Camilla Belle have been showing up to events in looks they coordinated themselves. As Diane explained to a U.K. magazine earlier this year, "Who knows better what I like than myself?"

Of course, the decision to go at it alone isn't for everyone. For some actresses, a stylist can be not only a helpful advisor but a huge time-saver as well. But Blake and co. don't seem to mind putting in the extra hours. "[Fashion] is one of my favorite hobbies," Blake said. "And I'm going to pay someone to steal my hobby from me? That's a terrible idea!"
