Zendaya’s Stylist Law Roach on How to Dress for All Your Holiday Parties

We’re pretty obsessed with Zendaya’s sometimes unexpected, but always flawless red carpet outings — her pink all-floral outfit at the American Music Awards was no exception! — and we have her stylist Law Roach to thank.
For the AMAs, Law went the unpredictable route once again. “We knew it was going to a night of long dresses,” he said. “It was going to be a night of lot of skin and I always want to make a point that you don’t have to be naked to end up on the best dressed list.” Point taken, as Zendaya’s Emanuel Ungaro spring 2016 outfit definitely stood out in the fashion round-ups the next morning. (Side note: Zendaya, Law and Ungaro creative director Fausto Puglisi are practically BFFs at this point.)
“She had on a really short skirt and she had the collar buttoned all the way up with long sleeves,” he added, which is an apropos sentiment for styling your outfits for upcoming holiday events that might involve mom and dad (or your new boss).
He was actually pulling double-duty for the AMAs by also dressing Ariana Grande for the first time ever. “I kept it really simple,” Law said. “I just wanted to dive in and figure out where we could meet together and the Giambattista [dress] was a little bit — or a lot — of both of us.” The final pick: a sophisticated and structural, but exuberantly flirtatious Giambattista Valli Couture dress.
So obviously we needed to ask Law for some Zendaya (and Ariana) approved tips on what to all kinds of seasonal festivities — from family gatherings to your first office holiday party to your bestie’s blowout bash that you’ve been waiting for all year.

The family get-together.
“With your family, you definitely have the opportunity to be fashion-y, but more comfortable and casual. I’m thinking: a great pair of leggings, a really oversize comfy cozy sweater and tall flat boots. Because if you’re with your family, you should have no pressure. You are in your safe zone. You can still be cute, but really comfy and that way you don’t have to worry about being feeling stuffed or uncomfortable when you overeat. Because we all will.”

Your first dressed up office (or internship) holiday party.
“Let me take it back to the first holiday party when I was working: First of all, this is the situation where you have to dress up and look your best. If you want to look a little more sophisticated, a great menswear style suit will look spectacular at the holidays. It’s something that’s fashion forward, but has that menswear tailoring to it. Even if it’s not a full suit, if it’s a really great pant and great blouse — amazing.”

The conference room holiday party at work.
“I would love to do a re-introduction of the blouse. I remember my mom and her friends, when they were working, it was all about beautiful blouses or the pussy bow blouse. I love stuff like that. I think it’s really great for the holidays. Let’s do great pair of jeans [or a nice pair of trousers, depending on your office dress code] and a beautiful silky type blouse.”

Your friend’s house party.
“You never know what friend is gonna invite another friend and this is where you can have a dress that’s a little bit sexier. Definitely something you couldn’t wear to work or that you didn’t want to wear around your grandma and grandpa. You’re going to be with all your friends and you could meet that holiday boo! Maybe this is the chance to wear that cocktail dress that you’ve been dying to wear — something with a little sparkle. Oh, definitely a high heel, darlin’. But something with more of a chunky heel. That way you don’t have to be that girl who has her shoes off an hour into the party.”

The ugly sweater holiday party.
“Cute hair and makeup? ‘Cuz an ugly sweater is an ugly sweater. You could belt it — it's still ugly. You could wear amazing jeans, leggings — it’s still ugly. I think if you’re going to an ugly sweater party, make sure your hair and makeup are on point.”
