2023 truly brought us iconic red carpet looks. This year, the red carpet ushered in major stars, each with their own unique fashion statements. From the first event of the season, the Golden Globes, to spring’s infamous Met Gala, the red carpet delivered coveted archival pieces, drama, and sparkle showers. Even outside of the usual red carpet lineup, 2023 brought us the iconic, well-executed red carpet takeover—Margot Robbie's Barbie press tour. Truly, there are almost too many noteworthy red carpet moments for just this year! Not sure how 2024 will top this, TBH.
Teen Vogue revisited some of the most stylish red carpet looks that rocked our feeds. Here are the best 23 of 2023:
Sydney Sweeney in Miu Miu at the Anyone But You Premiere in New York
Sydney Sweeney isn’t a stranger to a jaw-dropping Miu Miu gown. In fact, the actress has been serving a whole fleet of glamorous gowns all year. The standout red carpet look, however, is certainly her transparent, crystal-jeweled Miu Miu gown at the New York premiere of her new movie, Anyone But You. Paired with a black belt, the dress’s cinched shape, silver sequins, and plunging neckline flattered the leading lady’s figure, and she even had crystal-tipped nails to match!
Hoyeon Jung in Louis Vuitton at the BAFTAs
At this year’s BAFTAs, Squid Game actor and model Hoyeon Jung gave the red carpet a gold rush – an unforgettable strapless gold Louis Vuitton gown. A golden choice. As a global ambassador, it is unsurprising that the star frequents the red carpet wearing the brand. Earlier this year, she also opened Louis Vuitton’s pre-fall fashion show in Seoul, South Korea.
Margot Robbie in Schiaparelli at the Barbie Premiere in Los Angeles
Thanks to Barbie, the world was covered in pink this year, and every single outfit on the Barbie press tour was nothing short of iconic. However, the best red carpet look (or pink carpet) is certainly Margot’s Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown at the L.A. premiere of Barbie. The surrealist fashion brand described the gown as “a fully sequined embroidered bustier dress finished with multiple layers of tulle adorned with a hand-painted embroidered rose and a pale pink silk mousseline scarf.”
Florence Pugh in Valentino at the BoF500 Gala
Florence Pugh knows that less is more, and the actor has a style reputation that is categorized by her periodic sheer looks. So, it is not a sheer coincidence that Pugh’s best red carpet look this year features a barely-there component. At the BoF500 Gala during Paris Fashion Week earlier this fall, the actress opted for a black Valentino gown with a long train and a sheer bodice bikini-style bust-hugging top.
Jennie of BLACKPINK in Chanel at the Cannes Film Festival
Earlier this year, BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim made her Met Gala debut wearing vintage Chanel (which makes sense because she’s been an ambassador of the brand since 2017). The K-pop trendsetter went on to up the ante at the The Idol premiere during the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival. She wore a white lace Chanel bridal dress with black tulle draping her arms. A match made in heaven!
Emma Corrin in Miu Miu for The Crown (Season Six Finale Event)
Pantless tuxedo? Inspo from the Princess Diana? What else could you possibly want from a red carpet look? We all know that Emma Corrin rarely misses on the red carpet; previous looks included a baggy suit and Miu Miu cardigan with briefs. But this look takes the crown. The actor showed up to the season six finale of The Crown wearing a custom statement look by Miu Miu featuring sheerness and inspired by Princess Diana’s white pantsuit look in Italy in 1985. Hats off to Harry Lambert for styling this pantless red carpet ‘fit!
Jenna Ortega in Gucci at the Golden Globes
Last year, Jenna Ortega graced us with a series of stunning, signature all-black Wednesday Addams red carpet looks. It seems like her gothic reign is on pause for now, pending Wednesday season 2, and the actress kicked off the year’s red carpet events at the Golden Globes in a sandy-colored pleated Gucci dress featuring drapes and ruffles. It gave goddess energy.
Coco Jones in Zuhair Murad at The Grammys
Coco Jones was decked out in all gold for the 2023 Grammy Awards. Her Zuhair Murad gown featured intricate beading, forming the shapes of fireworks, and a daring led slit that revealed matching gold shoes. Perhaps, we could even go as far to call it a manifestation because Jones went on to score major nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards. We can't wait to see what she wears next year!
Harry Styles in EGONLAB x Swarovski at The Grammys
Unsurprisingly, Harry Styles made the best-dressed red carpet list. He is known to be one of the best-dressed pop musicians in the world, and Vogue’s named him “king of the jumpsuits.” Speaking of jumpsuits, the singer stole the Grammy red carpet this year wearing a squared-neck rainbow sequin jumpsuit by EGONLAB featuring Swarovski crystals. Who said all the glitters is not gold? We back the rainbow jumpsuit.
Rosalía in Balenciaga at the Latin Grammy Awards
Rosalía knows how to make an entrance. The "Bizochito" singer stepped out in a form-fitting, semi-sheer maxi lace Balenciaga gown at the Latin Grammy Awards, which left people coining it the revenge dress. It was her first red carpet appearance post-breakup, and she certainly showed up! Whether it was intentional or not, Rosalía wore the dress flawlessly, giving us all some much-needed cheeky confidence that we can back.
Tyla in Di Petsa at the GQ MOTY Party
South African singer Tyla literally embodied her song “Water” on the red carpet at this year’s GQ Man of the Year Party. Her sheer pale blue Di Petsa dress draped her figure perfectly, and the brand is notorious for their signature “wet look” pieces, so it doesn’t feel like a coincidence that the singer wore this dress to make a splash!
Evan Mock in Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello at the GQ MOTY Party
Fashion favorite actor and skater boy Evan Mock is known to successfully pair his athletic aesthetic with high fashion. Outside his signature pink buzz cut, the 26-year-old regularly turns heads on the red carpet. At this year’ GQ MOTY party, Evan rocked an all-black Saint Laurent look featuring a extra-large bow-tied high-neck button-down shirt and slightly baggy black leather pants. If this is his twist on black-tie season, we bow down.
Conan Gray in Ann Demeulemeester at the GQ MOTY Party
Singer and songwriter Conan Gray has been donning Shakespearean-style vibes for the majority of the year. His GQ MOTY Party look took it to the next level with an all-black Ann Demeulemeester look featuring a deep plunge V-neck blazer (sans shirt underneath), baggy wide-legged pants, and black leather gloves. The devil is in the details with this one because, if you look closely, there is a subtle sheer lacey skirt that falls over the pants. An outfit fit for the gods!
Dua Lipa in Chanel at the Met Gala
As one of the hosts of the Met Gala 2023, Dua Lipa had no choice but to serve. She delivered in a vintage Chanel tweed corset gown from 1992. The best part? It had pockets!
Song Hyekyo in Fendi at the Met Gala
The Glory actress Song Hyekyo made her Met Gala debut this year wearing a stunning pale peach-colored Fendi gown. The subtly lingerie-like satin dress gathers at the right corner of the star’s waist and falls into lace-accented layers. The perfect mixture of elegance and femininity. Glory be!
Emma Chamberlain in Miu Miu at the Met Gala
Emma Chamberlain is a formidable force in the fashion industry, and she just added her third year as Vogue red carpet correspondent at the Met Gala to her already stellar credentials. Among all her fantastic style changes, the red carpet look that was unforgettable was her Choupette (get it?) blue cropped co-ord suit from Miu Miu. With all the bridal gowns on the red carpets this year, think of this look as the something blue!
Zendaya in Versace at the 54th NAACP Image Awards
There isn't a red carpet that style queen Zendaya doesn’t slay. In fact, the Euphoria star has cemented herself as the one to watch anytime there is a red carpet in sight. Her best red carpet look this year (and choosing only one is no easy feat) is her black vintage Versace gown with lime green accents at the NAACP Image Awards. The strapless couture dress is from the 2002 collection (an archive in true Z fashion) and hugged her figure while featuring a deep plunge V-neckline and a center knee-high slip. All business (and a party) in the front with this dress!
Rihanna in Alaïa at the Oscars
Think it is safe to say that no best-dressed red carpet list is ever complete or credible unless it features Rihanna. The singer has been breaking the internet all year with her stylish sheer maternity outfits alone. Speaking of maternity clothes, Ri Ri made the best red carpet moment list for her custom black leather strappy Alaïa bandeau-bustier and low-rise leather skirt ensemble with a sheer base. It was certainly bumpin’.
Nicola Coughlan in Harris Reed for Vogue World: London
Fitting for an actor about to step into the lead role of Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan brought main character energy to Vogue World in London this year. She wore a Harris Reed off-the-shoulder satin and velvet gown combined with a larger-than-life head piece.
Sabrina Carpenter in Vera Wang Haute at the MTV VMAs
Sabrina Carpenter has quickly become a favorite fashion icon, probably because she's always experimenting with trends. For example, earlier this year, she gave us a black sheer dress with a grungy twist. Next thing you know, she steps out at the MTV VMAs looking angelic in a custom Vera Wang Haute white sheer dress. The brand described the dress as a “custom white Italian soft tulle draped gown with a crystal embellished corset.” Heavenly!
Selena Gomez in Oscar de La Renta at the MTV VMAs
Roll out the red carpet because Selena Gomez needs no introduction. As the recurring trendsetter she is, she knows how to make a statement (many of which include couture and daring cuts). The singer wore a custom, fiery red cut-out Oscar de La Renta gown to the VMAs that featured sequined floral patterns pieced together, giving a peek-a-boo skin effect. Selena was winning in the dress, and she also won the Best Afrobeats award for the song “Calm Down” with Rema. A win-win.
Cardi B in Dilara Findikoglu at the MTV VMAs
Okuuuuuuurt. TBH, Cardi B has been serving us looks year round with a notable nod to her emerald-blue structural Gaurav Gupta gown at the Grammys. But her best red carpet look this year is her MTV VMAs Dilara Findikoglu gown, made up of hundreds of silver hair clips of different sizes and varieties. Styled by Kollin Carter, Cardi B certainly let her hair down, skipping the clips and wearing them in dress form instead. It is creative, it is stunning, and it is so Cardi!
Stray Kids at the MTV VMAs
VMA red carpet debuts are always seemingly epic, and the Stray Kids’ debut is no different. Billboard chart-toppers Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and I.N looked dapper on the red carpet in coordinated black suits, button-ups and dress shoes. Not only did they win the “Best K-pop” award for their song S-Class, but they left the crowd (and not to be dramatic, but also the entire world) stunned with a performance of the song. Like their lyrics say, best of the best!
