Everyone needs a good coat, so that's why we asked our Teen Vogue editors for their favorite one. You can never have too many good coats, especially when living in places that stay cold for almost half the year.
There are so many things to consider when on the hunt for a good coat. As fashion girlies, we cannot deny that style plays the first key role. It's important to find a stylish coat. And this has nothing to do with the trends, people (unless that's your poison). A favorite coat needs to feel intrinsic to you and only you. That is the only way you'll find a coat that you want to keep a long time. Think about what's important to you. Is it the print? Do you like solid colored pieces or something a little bit more attention-grabbing? Whatever direction, focus on finding those similar in taste. After that, we need to consider sizing. What coats carry your size? Take the time to look at measurements and examine how the coat will fit you. Then take some time to figure out your budget. Coats can be quite expensive, so you need to decide how much you're willing to spend and if this will be an investment coat. Lastly, look into the materials it's made with and its wearability! Don't be afraid to read multiple reviews, like the ones we have below and the ones on a brand's website. No matter what your goals, it's vital to have a few good coats in your rolodex.
Below, our Teen Vogue editors share their favorite coats for your shopping pleasure.
Claire Dodson, Senior Culture Editor This coat is exactly what it says it is: a wool top coat. It is not truly for warmth — it’s a layering tool, a car coat, a 50-degree coat. That said, I run hot, and the piece has become a go-to pull-on coat when I know I won’t be out in the elements too long. It’s slightly oversized but cut more slimly through the hips, and I think worth going up a size if you want to wear it in cold conditions with thicker layers. My one wish is that it had some kind of lining, the wool can be a bit itchy!
A jacket that’s versatile, comfortable, sleek, warm, and timeless is a hard ask, but this Theory wool-cashmere shell ticks all of the boxes. Like, it’s literally perfect. Well, almost. (I’ll get to that very minor drawback in a bit.) The silhouette is classic without being dowdy; I can honestly picture wearing this jacket for decades. Since it’s double-faced, it’s also surprisingly warm for being so light. While it’s too light for freezing temps, it’s perfect for late fall and early spring—I wore it regularly in early December in New York City. It pairs nicely with dresses and tights, but also elevates jeans and sneakers. I feel extra put-together when I wear it, no matter what I have on underneath. If you’re looking for a classic shell-style jacket, this is the jacket you want. I love that it fully covers my backside, but I’m a 5’1" shorty, so it’ll be an entirely different fit on someone taller. Now to the main drawback: I wish the pockets were cut closer to the front of the body. It’s a bit frustrating to have to reach backward to place my hands in them. Still, a lovely, classic, wonderful jacket that I’ve been reaching for nearly every single day this fall.
A belted blazer wasn’t something I thought I needed to round out my fall wardrobe until I came across a photo of this particular one. It’s very much on-trend: plaid, academia-core, oversize, and the belting adds an extra layer of chicness. I love the look of it when it’s unbuttoned and wrapped tightly. Buttoned, however, it looks a bit drab, and billows awkwardly around the chest and hips when you add the cinching with the belt. I get it, it’s meant to be oversize, but the stiff fabric doesn’t skim the body the way a lighter oversize jacket would. (Say, a belted oversize trench.) I also really, really wish there were belt loops, but alas. I do still love the look of it, though, and have plans to take it to my tailor, with instruction to slightly shorten the belt, use that extra fabric to add loops, and add a button across the chest that would allow me to button it tighter—quick and inexpensive fixes that I imagine will totally transform the piece. It took me decades to realize I can pay a bit of money to have things tailored so they fit perfectly; don’t be like me!
I've had my eye on this puffer for months, and clearly everyone else has too because it's sold out everywhere. The Sandy Liang Bommy puffer is in a lot of ways your standard oversized, fleece lined puffer and oversized, voluminous fit but of course with classic Sandy adornments-- stringy bows from top to bottom. Although it's quite simple in theory, the bows and ruching create a fun and unique look to an everyday jacket. In terms of utility, the jacket kept me quite warm, the lining is a huge plus. It's definitely an oversized fit as I'm usually a medium and the small fit great. My one critique is the pockets were placed a bit far back on the coat for my liking and ease but aside from that, this could be my everyday staple winter jacket. I also love that It's cute with a casual T-shirt and jeans but also pairs nicely with a nighttime dressier look. I need that versatility in my closet.
I love the subtle reflective sheen of this “Liquid Shine” Aritzia Superpuff coat which gives it the allure of a soft velvet or luxe leather, while actually being practical and low maintance—it’s both water-resistant and machine washable! It’s the perfect choice for an easy coat that serves both fashion and function!
This cropped puffer from Moose Knuckle is my favorite this winter. It's like wearing a cozy cloud. Super warm and lightweight, I find most Winter coats to be drab and annoyingly bulky but this is not your typical puffer and it's perfect for these chilly days. The warmth is unbeatable- I can wear light layers underneath and it's waterproof so I don't have to worry about the texture of the jacket changing. The fit is spot on, and I love the attention to detail with the- soft velent texture, perfectly placed pockets and hidden zippers so the jacket looks super sleek .I love how easily it pairs with different outfits. It's so versatile; so I can throw it on for errands or dress it up a bit
I am always looking for a good coat. You can never have too many is my honest opinion. They're so stylish and chic. This one has been sitting at the top o my list for a minute and I was not disappointed. It fit great and was the perfect color i'd been looking for. I love anyting that doesn't look too short on me and this coat fit the mold. I plan to wear this weekly because of how cute it is. it's also very warm which isn't always the case with coats like this. It's become one of my favorites for sure.
