Another New York Fashion Week is in the books. Like every season, spring-summer 2024 presented so many different looks. From dream-like motifs to deconstruction demos, NYFW showed us range. Even though each designer has a unique vision and signature aesthetic, there are some trends we couldn’t help but notice, especially in the makeup department.
It seems like the runway trends fall right in line with those of TikTok and celebs, giving us a clear forecast of what’s to come in the beauty world, and there’s something for everyone — from no-makeup makeup to abstract looks. Here are seven makeup trends we spotted at New York Fashion Week spring-summer 2024:
Cloud Skin
It seems like this dreamy makeup trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and it makes sense that it was all over the spring-summer 2024 shows; the subtle glow has a picturesque finish that’s perfect for the runway. At Dauphinette, makeup artists highlighted the base by juxtaposing it with bold red lipstick. At Christian Siriano, however, they favored an overall soft glam look using the Beautiful Skin Foundation and Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer from Charlotte Tilbury.
No-Makeup Makeup
The no-makeup makeup look took off in 2020 and hasn’t let up quite yet. This style has been on many runways, including those of Dion Lee who opted for bleached brows and ADEAM where facial piercings emphasized the look. To recreate barely-there glam at home, we suggest a sheer base like the Halo Glow Liquid Filter from e.l.f. and Telescopic Original Mascara from L'Óreal.
Glossy Lips
Sorry to the matte lip, but glow continues to reign supreme this season. Channel Kim Shui or Prabal Gurung's models who wore the brightly hued Squirt Plumping Gloss Stick from MAC. (The Amped and Like Squirt shades, respectively, to be precise!)
Abstract Liner
Similar to Donni Davy’s signature style and the anti-mascara trend that took over social media last year, NYFW saw plenty of unconventional eyeliner shapes this season. Some opted for heavier looks, like the smudged liner models wore for the CHARMS runway that took place during the Concept Korea showcase. To recreate a look like this, we'd suggest a pencil like the NYX All-In-One Eyeshadow Eyeliner Crayon. Or, you can keep it more refined, like LaQuan Smith, who reenvisioned a classic and showcased a double cat eye done by makeup artist Sheika Daley with Lancôme’s Idôle Liner.
Peachy Pink
It’s a Barbie world, and we’re all just living in it. Pink will always be a classic, but it’s getting a little revamp. While the past couple of years were all about bold, cool-toned pink shades, it looks like we might be seeing more peachy undertones in the near future. Anna Sui used Sected Eden from Pat McGrath’s Mothership IX: Huetopian Dream Palette to highlight this look on the eyes. PatBo went for a more subtle interpretation. We'd suggest a palette like Etude House's Play Color Eyes Pink Muhly Romance for a soft peachy pink look.
Blurred Lips
Coming straight from the Douyin makeup style, blurred lips are having a moment. Coach kept the makeup minimal, but for a focal point, they opted for a blurred-out ruby lipstick. If you prefer a more subtle look, you can find inspiration on Livette’s runway from the Indonesia Now showcase or Christian Siriano’s use of the Airbrush Flawless Lip Blur in Rose Blur from Charlotte Tilbury. To get add the blurred effect to all your lipsticks, you can also invest in a brush that does just that.
Pops of Color
While no-makeup makeup is a popular classic these days, a new addition to the look is a bold pop of color. It can be anywhere from the eyes, like Helmut Lang’s runway, to the lips, like Sami Miro’s vision.
