It was an evening of reunions at the Wicked premiere in Los Angeles last night, as two former witches made way for the next generation.
The film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical premiered in LA on Saturday, November 9, bringing together stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande with the original Wicked duo Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.
The four actors posed for the cameras, all wearing glamorous gowns that were fitting for their individual characters. Menzel and Erivo — the Elphabas of the group — stuck with black and green, while Grande and Chenoweth went with pink and sparkles, emulating Glinda.
Menzel and Chenoweth originated the roles for the stage production of Wicked in 2003, playing friends-turned-rivals in the now-famous prequel story. The Broadway musical is based on the 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, following the story of Elphaba, before she becomes the villain in The Wizard of Oz. The original cast and production won three Tony Awards and a Grammy for the soundtrack.
Grande and Erivo now take the reins for the two iconic characters and are starring in the two-part film adaptation. The first film is set to be released on November 22, while part two will come out almost exactly one year later.
Erivo and Grande posed on the red carpet in LA — Grande wearing a custom strapless white duchess satin dress in light pink from Thom Browne. The gown had matching gloves and a bow, while Grande paired it with glittery shoes. Erivo wore a bright green latex cutout dress with a matching tasseled boa.
The four stars were joined by many other celebrities and the remaining film cast including Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, and Bronwyn James. The premiere was packed with big names like Jennifer Lopez, Ashley Tisdale, Troye Sivan, Normani, and more.
