She’s president, she’s an astronaut, and she’s a vampire. She’s also a lawyer and founder of a major 2000s-era fashion label. But, most importantly, she’s Barbie.
Since the Barbie doll's launch 64 years ago, the iconic Mattel character has taken “multi-hyphenate” to an entirely new level, and she’s done it in style. As the highly anticipated film has its theatrical release today, we expect to see theaters full of pink to fulfill every one of our Barbiecore dreams.
After diving into the depths of Barbie’s many pasts, we’ve compiled 15 of our personal favorite – and most underrated – iterations of the doll that are certain to bring style inspiration to anyone still deciding on what to wear to the film screening. From a punk-ish tutu to matching Juicy Couture tracksuits, we cannot get enough of these Barbie dolls’ ensembles.
1. Proudly Pink Barbie
In head-to-toe pink, this 60th anniversary Barbie doll truly reflects the film’s craze for the color. She wears pink on her sleeve, and her vintage makeup and ice-blue eyeshadow switch things up while paying homage to the doll’s beginnings.
2. Twilight Eclipse Alice Barbie
Barbie channels Alice Cullen, the internet’s cult-favorite Twilight character, with her unforgettable layered blouse, vest, skinny jeans, and accessories. Barbie nailed the vampire’s look, down to her signature spiked-out, curled-up pixie cut.
3. Pop Life Christie
Originally introduced in 1968, Christie circles back to the style of the swinging ‘60s, with her beehive hairdo, optical-illusion shift dress, and thigh-high booties. For accessories, this mod doll dons chunky earrings, bangles, and a tiny spherical ring you may miss if you don’t look close enough.
4. Mattel 75th Anniversary Barbie
For Mattel’s milestone birthday in 2019, Barbie returned to her roots. This look undoubtedly started it all, with her emblematic striped bathing suit, curled microbangs, and chunky gold hoops. If only we could replicate this outfit every time we visited the beach.
5 and 6. Moschino Barbies
The slogan tee speaks for itself. Though Moschino and Barbie have quite a history of collaborations, these two dolls may be our favorites. Their stacks of gold necklaces and customizable outfits offer endless styling possibilities, especially if you’re going to the movies with your best friend and want to coordinate your looks.
7. Hard Rock Cafe Barbie
Her teased black-and-white ‘do holds as much volume as her tartan tutu skirt. Down to jet-black nails and punky makeup, this Barbie is totally reminiscent of Tripp NYC-wearing, platform-stomping mall goths that ruled the nineties.
8. Toujours Couture
This doll channels effortless chic. She sports pearl earrings, glossy makeup, and her blouse and pencil skirt remind us of a vintage Chanel tweed set. Her fishnets and pointed ankle boots add elements of edge to the look.
9. Kimora Lee Simmons Barbie
Well-versed in all things mcbling, this doll is based on the Baby Phat founder Kimora Lee Simmons. She dons a coordinating pink halter, miniskirt, and go-go boots, further elevated with bold jewelry and a floor-length fur coat. And she comes with her equally stylish dog, Zoe, of course.
10. Ferrari Barbie
She’s got places to go. Her pointed-toe boots sparkle with their “B” monogram and coordinate with her purse and cream dress. Her thigh-length red coat and headscarf complete the ensemble and prove she can embody any color to a tee. Barbie’s pink Corvette might just have competition.
11. Check, Please! Francie
Francie is referred to as Barbie’s “mod-ern” cousin, and understandably so. Her checkered newsboy cap, blazer, and pleated skirt are utterly in line with any coquette-inspired outfit (and we can’t get enough of her cartoonish pet dog).
12. Hello Kitty Barbie
This 2007 doll combines two of fashion’s greatest inspirations. The doll’s self-referential striped tube top is paired with a white moto jacket, ball chain necklace, metallic belt, and shoulder bag, each equally full of pink and Hello Kitty iconography. Her white pumps and cuff bracelets only add to the chicness.
13. Fashion Fever Nikki
If we catch her fashion fever, so be it. Nikki, who’s among Barbie’s best friends, rocks her metallic, monochromatic outfit with fur, glitter, and pom-poms. Après ski meets trendsetter of the early aughts.
14 and 15. Juicy Couture Barbies
Juicy tracksuits to the Barbie premiere? Yes, please. This coordinating doll-duo has perfected Y2K, from dusty lipstick shades and skinny brows, down to a gold ankle bracelet, belt, and knee-high socks reading “Viva la juicy.”
