Is period underwear really absorbent enough to replace pads?
The power of period underwear lies in the fabric being used. While they may look like regular underwear, they often contain extra layers and moisture-wicking fabric in the crotch area that absorbs menstrual blood and prevents it from leaking onto your clothes.
The specific fabrics utilized vary by brand, but commonly include quick-drying, absorbent, breathable, and flexible materials such as cotton, spandex, elastane, polyester, and microfibers. These fabrics ensure you feel dry throughout the day and are hardly aware that you're wearing period panties.
It also all depends on your own flow. “For those with light to moderate flow, period underwear may be sufficient on its own,” says board-certified ob-gyn Melanie Bone MD, the US Medical Director at virtual women’s health clinic Daye. However, those with very heavy flow will need to use period underwear in combination with other menstrual products (like a disc, cup, or tampon) or change their underwear more frequently, she says. That’s why, in the event that you do have a super-heavy flow, Dr. Shepherd suggests considering period underwear backup protection rather than as enough on their own.
How do you wash period underwear?
Each brand has different washing instructions, so make sure you read those beforehand. Most period undies, however, are machine-washable — though a cold-water wash is often specified.
Considering ease of wash is important, as these panties need to be cleaned very frequently — i.e. after each use. Plus, washing “empties” the blood, returning the panties to their original absorbency for their next wear.
Most period underwear also can’t go directly into the dryer so check the instructions on your pair to determine whether to tumble or air dry.
Do gynecologists recommend period underwear?
Yes, many gynecologists are team period panties. Board-certified ob-gyn Melanie Bone MD, the US Medical Director at virtual women’s health clinic Daye says that “as a gynecologist, [she does] recommend period underwear as an option.” Why? Because “they can be a comfortable, convenient, and eco-friendly alternative to disposable menstrual products.”
However, in general, menstrual product choice is highly personal, says Dr. Bone. So, period underwear may work well for some patients but not others. Whether it’s period panties or pads, discs or tampons she “encourage[s] patients to try different options to find what works best for their body and lifestyle.”
What are the drawbacks of period underwear?
There’s no doubt that period underwear offers many benefits, but there are some potential drawbacks to consider. To start, “the upfront cost of period underwear is higher than disposable products,” says Dr. Done. A single, not-on-sale pair of period underwear will usually put you out $20 to $40. Take into account that, “[unlike] tampons, which can be worn for up to 8 hours, most period underwear should be changed more frequently,” she says. That means you’ll need to shell out a solid c-note for just one day of production.
Further, “period underwear needs to be washed after each use, which requires more effort than disposing of pads or tampons,” says Dr. Bone. Finally, “from a comfort perspective, some find period underwear bulkier than their regular underwear, especially the styles designed for heavy flow,” she adds.
So, how exactly did we choose the best period underwear? We polled the experts (you know, people who menstruate) and tested many of these options on our list to find the styles that would provide the best protection, comfort, and style.
Our testing protocols had two main parts. First, prior to wearing the period underwear themselves, testers poured the amount of liquid each pair claimed they could hold right into the gusset. Any pair that failed to absorb the amount of liquid they claimed to be was disqualified from our ranking process, while pairs that held up against its claims moved on to real-world testing.
Next, after washing and drying the period underwear according to the unique instructions specified for each pair, the testers wore these period underwear while menstruating. This process allowed the testing team to use first-hand experience to assess each pair of panties by absorbance, odor, durability, and ease of washing and drying.
When putting together this round-up, we also considered available styles, colors, and styles. Plus, whether or not the underwear and absorbent gusset could be seen through thin bottoms like leggings.
