BLACKPINK's Rosé is getting candid about the good, the bad, and the Taylor Swift-aided experiences of working on her upcoming solo album rosie.
Ahead of the album's release on December 6, Rosé is gracing the cover of i-D and opening up all about the process of working on rosie — her first solo project since parting ways with YG Entertainment for her individual career in 2023 and signing with The Black Label — including a time she was “drowning” (not literally but creatively, of course) and Taylor Swift came to the rescue.
Speaking to the magazine, Rosé recalled meeting Swift (again) last September at a party hosted by Jack Antonoff in Electric Lady Studios, when she was right in the middle of working on rosie and revealed the “Fortnight” singer immediately blessed her with some words of wisdom.
“I told her I’m such a huge fan and I just had some questions. As soon as she met me, she [was] like, ‘Spill, let me help you out,’” Rosé recounted. “She gave me her experiences and was so ready to help me. She gave me her number, and she [was] like, ‘Let me know if you have any questions.’ Who does that? Like, you’re Taylor Swift!”
Though Rosé did not share the advice she got from Swift specifically — I'm afraid we'd have to pay for that level of expertise! — she shared that her words came at a time when she needed them most.
"I’m really grateful for her because I was at a moment where I was drowning a little,” she said. “She is literally the coolest, and she’s such a girl’s girl. She was telling me – make sure to take care of this, this and this – like, logistics. She was trying to protect me. Me becoming solo, being independent, it’s not an easy thing. There are a lot of things I should be careful with, and she gave me a rundown on all the things I have to look out for. That was the coolest part – she’s killed it in the game, and she was kind enough to walk me through.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Rosé also opened up about how rosie will differ from her work previous solo releases and her work under BLACKPINK, admitting the latter is almost like a popstar façade for her and rosie is the rawest version of herself that her fans, now christened as “number ones,” have yet to see.
“I wanted rosie to portray what I live and breathe. I feel like BLACKPINK was my alter ego – I grew up watching Beyoncé performances, when it would take like, two hours to load videos on YouTube. I’m obsessed with that, and I’m so grateful because I’ve been able to live that life for almost a decade, and it still is the best thing but then Rosie, on the other hand, would be the girl who was downloading it at home," she explained. "This is all me. BLACKPINK was the dream, rosie is still the dream. I feel like they both represent me so well. And I mean, that’s why I always say: I’m a grateful little girl.”
Rosé's rosie, from The Black Label and Atlantic Records, will arrive on December 6. You can pre-save and pre-order the album now here.
