After years of avoiding pants, Jane Keltner de Valle stops skirting the issue and finds a pair of jeans she can love.

So notorious is my commitment to skirts and dresses that when I told my fellow editors about my mission to find the perfect pair of jeans, there was a collective gasp. "Are you joking?" asked one. "You don't wear jeans!" added another. They were right. The last time I sported jeans with any regularity—let alone in public—I was just out of college and my body followed a perfectly straight and narrow line. I stopped wearing all manner of pants as soon as I acquired hips. To clarify, I like jeans. I just don't like them on me. And until now, I've skirted the issue quite successfully. My closet is filled with nipped- waist dresses, a silhouette I've made my signature. As different denim trends have come and gone—the peg-leg, jeggings, flares, the uberlean Balmain—I sat out each and every one. It wasn't until the fall shows that I felt compelled to reconsider my pants strike.
