“The ambition is: how do I not hate myself, my job, my life, and do this?”

Chappell Roan might have just won her first award ever at the 2024 VMAs, but music trophies are not something the musician necessarily holds in high esteem, and she's explaining exactly why in a new interview with British magazine The Face.

Roan — who was tapped as one of the cover stars of the publication’s fall 2014 issue alongside Emma Chamberlain, Madeline Argy, Mustafa, and more — opened up about the value she places in awards, revealing why she almost hopes not to get a coveted prize such as a Grammy.

Roan, who’s speculated to nab at least one nomination by The Recording Academy this November, is not really manifesting a win at the famed event. “My mom would love to go to the Grammys or the Brits,” Roan told the interviewer before admitting she is “kind of hoping I don’t win.”

Why? You might be wondering. “Because then everyone will get off my *ss,” Roan explained. “‘See guys, we did it, and we didn’t win, bye’! I won’t have to do this again!” she added.

Instead of striving for fleeting recognition via awards, Roan said her end game is to make her career last as long as possible. “I feel ambitious about making this sustainable,” she admitted. “That’s my biggest goal right now. My brain is like: quit right now, take next year off.”

Elaborating on that last sentiment, she explained how she feels the music industry thieves on “mental illness, burnout, overworking yourself, overextending yourself, not sleeping.”

“You get bigger the more unhealthy you are. Isn’t that so f*cked up?” she continued, adding that her plan is to do the opposite. “The ambition is: how do I not hate myself, my job, my life, and do this? Because right now, it’s not working. I’m just scrambling to try to feel healthy.”

While Roan has not yet been officially nominated for a Brit or a Grammy, as both will be announced later in the year, all signs say she will, and the answer might not be as unequivocal if she does win. After all, she did celebrate her VMAs win effusively and even canceled a few European shows to be able to attend the ceremony. Time will tell!
