Demi Lovato surprised fans earlier this week by dropping a scathing new song that rips apart the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Just two days before the one-year anniversary of the court's decision to reverse the constitutional right to abortion, Lovato released “SWINE." Commemorating the anniversary, Lovato wrote in a social media post promoting the song that “although the path forward will be challenging, we must continue to be united in our fight for reproductive justice.”
“I created ‘SWINE’ to amplify the voices of those who advocate for choice and bodily autonomy,” Lovato wrote. “I want this song to empower not only the birthing people of this country, but everyone who stands up for equality, to embrace their agency and fight for a world where every person's right to make decisions about their own body is honored.”
Some of the lyrics from “SWINE” include, “F**k what I think, I don't know a thing/ The government knows my body/ No, it's okay, it's better this way, I'm only a carbon copy/ Even if I'm dying, they'll still try to stop me.” The singer belts out the chorus, “My life, my voice/ My rights, my choice/ It's mine, or I'm just swine.”
Not only is the rock ballad a reflection of Lovato's and many Americans' anger against Roe v. Wade being overturned, but for the next year, profits from the track will also be donated to the Reproductive Justice Fund at the Demi Lovato Foundation — which will then be dispersed to NARAL Pro-Choice America, Plan C, and The National Network of Abortion Funds.

Lovato's foray into political music is nothing new — the musician released a song in 2020 ahead of the presidential election called, “Commander in Chief,” which was a takedown of former President Donald Trump. The song was co-written with Finneas.
On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that solidified the right to legal, safe abortion in the U.S. Since that day, 14 states have banned most abortions or enacted limits to abortions, while others are stuck in legal battles to try and do the same.
