Jeans have dominated pop-culture for decades. Whether we’re taking note of celeb-favorite cargo pants, looking at Kylie Jenner's baggy jeans or remembering Britney and Justin’s infamous all-denim looks, we can’t help but be captivated by what covers our derrieres. And just like fashion, jean trends are ever-evolving.
Fashion expert Rachel Weingarten tells Teen Vogue, “The good news is that denim […] in any combination or permutation is a trend that’s smokin’ hot for 2023.”
To get an idea of what jeans we’re going to be seeing this year, we looked at Pinterest’s trend predictions based on what people are already searching for. According to Swasti Sarna, Global Director of Insights at Pinterest, there’s a lot to look forward to.
“On Pinterest, people are increasingly shopping for jeans with unique silhouettes like cargos, wide legs and frayed hems,” Sarna tells Teen Vogue. “We’re also seeing men experiment with fresh styles as searches for ‘black baggy jeans outfit men’ increased 250% since last year. In addition, Pinners are leaning into modified jeans, with ‘sashiko jeans’ and ‘hand painted jeans’ up 70% and 340% respectively.”
While skinny jeans firmly remain persona non grata, flare jeans will continue to enjoy their rise in popularity. And while they may not be everyone’s style, there are happy mediums. Weingarten says, “Since fashion always celebrates opposite trends, for everyone who embraces flares, we’ll see cute crops as well.”
But flare jeans aren't the only comeback that will be dominating 2023. “We’ll be seeing more baggy jeans, a look that was super cute in the ‘90s,” Weingarten shares.
Regardless of what your personal preference is, it’s good to know that 2023 will bring a plethora of denim options for the newly fashion acquainted to the seasoned fashionista to enjoy. The bottom line: we’re going to be seeing a lot of statement jeans. And cargo pants!
Cargo Pants
Gigi Hadid and Kim K have been making a strong case for cargo-chic recently. Though they’re not always denim, we can’t ignore how big this trend is right now. Cargo pants can be paired with crop top and platform slides for a casual summer look. For a pop of color, add a pouch.
Flare Jeans
The eternal conundrum: how to wear flare jeans. Teen Vogue’s solution? Take inspiration from Gen Z faves like BlACKPINK's Lisa and Sadie Sink who got it all figured out.
Baggy Jeans
Baggy pants are having a moment right now and fashionistas like Dua Lipa and Kylie Jenner know it.
Colorful Flares
Minimalist is on its way out and maximalist is in! Just ask Bella Hadid. Get a jump on spring and liven your wardrobe up with a splash of color. Multicolored jeans are a fun, bold twist to the flare trend.
Frayed Hem Jeans
To get the best ‘model off duty’ look (think: Gigi Hadid, Kaia Garber), you’ll want to grab a pair of the classic frayed hem jeans. They make the perfect backdrop for highlighting statement pieces.
Modified Jeans
It takes major confidence to pull off modified jeans—Beyonce level confidence, one would say. But the good news is that they are back. In order to enhance rather than distract away from these details go for understated pieces: like a little black bag or loafers. For a more experimental look, style with a graphic knit top.
