Derek Chauvin Verdict Cause for Tears, Relief in George Floyd Killing: Photos

The reactions were mixed, but full of feeling. After a jury decided Tuesday that former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was guilty of murdering George Floyd, observers gathered outside the local Hennepin County Government Center courthouse erupted in cheers. Some wept behind masks, or held loved ones. Across the country, from Capitol Hill to the streets of Atlanta and Brooklyn, observers let out sighs of relief. Protesters held vigils and solidarity marches, and mothers spoke to their children about what this moment means. Almost one year after Chauvin killed Floyd outside the Cup Food grocery store in broad daylight, he was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Some took comfort in the fact that, in this rare instance, a police officer was held accountable for his actions. Others asked what kind of justice this really is.
